‘I’m Getting Both Full-Fledged Language Practice and Practical Experience in Economics’
Having partner companies is an important factor in the competitiveness of any Master’s programme. One of the partners of the programme ‘Germanica: History and Modernity’, which launched last year at the Faculty of Humanities, is the Russian-German Chamber of Commerce. Already in their first year of study, several students have been hired by the Chamber as interns.
HSE’s cooperation with the Russian-German Chamber of Commerce (AHK), which represents German companies in Russia, began several years ago.
‘We have participated numerous times in the information fair held at the Welt und Wissenschaft academic and professional conference for undergraduate and graduate students at HSE University,’ says Natalia Dorochenkova, senior recruiting expert at AHK. ‘In the fall of 2020, we decided to continue our cooperation with the University by working with the Master’s programme "Germanica: History and Modernity" and to hire several students as interns.’
At the invitation of Yulia Pasko, a course instructor at Kulturschlüssel Deutsch, Natalia Dorochenkova and her HR colleague Oksana Avdoshkina took part in a seminar on business communication. In particular, they discussed the key elements of initial communication with potential employers. AHK representatives talked about the ways in which communication standards in the office are changing, and they shared tips for preparing for interviews and practical advice on finding a job.

One of the key criteria for inviting students to work as interns in our organization is their knowledge of the German language. Students of the Master’s programme have a high level of proficiency in it, so immediately after the seminar, we invited five students to work in different departments. Within a few weeks, we began to receive positive feedback from colleagues who became their mentors. For example, they were noted for their high motivation, desire to learn on the job, and readiness to join in solving spontaneous tasks. We are happy to keep in touch with other Germanica students who may be interested in interning at AHK. We hope to see them among our interns this year and next.

Every day we interact with a large number of candidates for various positions, and we were pleasantly surprised that students of the programme “Germanica: History and Modernity” are able to draw up resumes and application documents and make a strong impression during the first interview. ‘I started my internship at AHK a few weeks ago and am already very satisfied and inspired! All my colleagues are happy to share their experience and ready to help with any difficulties, and not a day goes by without speaking German. I chose to work in the Department of Dual Professional Education and for the first time delved into internal processes. For example, I got acquainted with the CRM system. Then I got involved in searching for events relevant to the specifics of the department and researching topics and issues for inclusion on professional exams. The tasks are very interesting, and I’m learning a lot about the dual education system. I am sure that the rest of my internship will be as exciting as the beginning has been.’

‘The first thing I noticed was the atmosphere and the people. It is very nice to work with such a team. The interns are provided a lot of guidance: employees do not just give assignments, but explain in detail what and how a given task can be done more efficiently. They are not only competent specialists who know their business very well, but also wonderful people. Such an environment makes me want to develop and try my best, for which I am incredibly grateful.’

‘I’ve been doing my internship online since mid-January and it’s been a very interesting experience for me. It’s great that I can fulfill tasks that involve translating small interviews and charts. I was recently tasked with writing a short article, and I am also very happy with this experience. I also help with the development of the site and do a newspaper mailing every morning. I’m getting both full-fledged language practice and practical experience in economics. Thanks to my work, I am expanding my economic vocabulary. A huge plus is the friendly and helpful staff.’

The Brain in Space: Investigating the Effects of Long Spaceflights on Space Travellers
As part of an international project conducted with the participation of Roscosmos and the European Space Agency, a team of researchers used differential tractography to analyse dMRI scans ofcosmonauts’ brains and found significant changes in brain connectivity, with some of the changes persisting after seven months back on Earth. The paper is published in Frontiers in Neural Circuits.
