Reproductive Behavior of Russian and Indigenous Women in Small Towns and Villages

The concept of demographic policy of the Russian Federation (2007) as the main measure to improve the situation in the country provides stimulation of fertility; in the last 15 years the social policy has become more and more pronounced pro-natalist.

The main way has been economic encouragement of the birth rate, and not so much the first-born as the second and subsequent children. Given this, changes in fertility should be expected mainly among women of middle and older fertile ages. However, according to a number of assessments, the measures within the framework of the "2007 package" at the national level have a relatively weak impact on fertility in the middle fertile ages. In order to make a balanced assessment of the effectiveness of interventions, it is important to accumulate information not only on large-scale (country-wide) changes, but also on the dynamics of reproductive attitudes and practices in local groups that differ by social and economic status and ethnicity.

The main source of data on the reproductive behavior of ethnic minority women in Russia is sample surveys of the population. It is possible to expand and verify the information and to assess the biomedical effect of the social (demographic) policy by using anthropological approaches, since data on birth weight serve as an indirect indicator of the well-being of the population or a particular social group.

Objective of the study: based on materials of medical and anthropological research in 1987-2020, to assess changes in reproductive behavior of Permian Komi and Russian women living in villages and small towns as well as to evaluate possible influence of these changes on the status of newborns.

The data source is the histories of 2447 normal singleton births delivered at the KPO County Hospital in 1987, 1996-97, 2007, and 2019-20. We examined indicators of women's age at childbirth and sexual debut; number of births and abortions before the birth of the firstborn; marital status of the birth mother; and the proportion of children born out of wedlock. Analysis of infant status - by body weight of newborns with gestational age of 39-40 weeks.
