HSE Enters 13 QS Subject Rankings

HSE Enters 13 QS Subject Rankings

The Higher School of Economics has made it onto 13 subject and two broader subject rankings in the QS World University Ranking thanks to the university’s achievements as part of the 5-100 Project. In addition, HSE was in the top 100 ranking for three areas – Economics and Econometrics, Politics and International Studies, and Sociology – and it was the only Russian school in the Accounting & Finance 101-150 ranking. As for total number of subject area rankings, HSE was third in Russia after only Moscow State University and St. Petersburg State University.

‘HSE has been improving rapidly since the start of the 5-100 Project, ranking at the top of four to five new subject areas each year and repeatedly improving its position in the subject rankings from past years,’ according to Irina Karelina, the Director of HSE’s development programme.

In the Social Sciences and Management category, HSE ranked 155, up from 161 last year, and the university improved its ranking in nearly all of this category’s specific subject areas. HSE was in the top 51-100 for Economics and Econometrics, Politics and International Studies, and Sociology; 101-150 for Accounting & Finance; and 151-200 for Business and Management. In addition, HSE made it onto three new subject rankings in the Social Sciences and Management category, ranking in the top 151-200 for Communication and Media Studies and the top 201-250 for both Law and Education.

For the first time ever, the Higher School of Economics was honoured with a spot in the top 151-200 for History and Linguistics, both of which fall under the Arts & Humanities broad subject area. In addition, for the third year in a row, HSE ranked in the 151-200 group for Philosophy, a subject area that includes more than 600 universities.

In the Mathematics ranking, HSE skyrocketed 100 positions compared to last year and was in the top 151-200 of more than 1,100 universities from around the world. In Computer Science and Information System, the university improved its ranking by 50 positions, moving into the top 351-400 out of more than 1,200 universities included in this subject ranking.

Subject rankings most accurately reflect a university’s real achievements in science and education. They are the best way to judge the quality of a school’s academic publications, and the reputation assessment for a particular field is carried out by professionals of that field and can therefore be considered first-hand assessments, which is not common for so-called institutional or consolidated rankings that assess universities as a whole.

Universities from 74 countries are represented in the QS subject and broad subject rankings. In 2017, the QS subject ranking increased from 42 to 46 different disciplines, the new subject areas being Anatomy & Physiology; Hospitality & Leisure Management; Sport-related Subjects; and Theology, Divinity & Religious Studies. The methodology is built on four sources: QS’s global surveys of academics and employers, which are used to evaluate an institution’s reputation in each field, and research impact, which is based on number of research citations and the h-index in the relevant subject. This is determined by using the Scopus database, and the reputational indicators make up between 50% and 100% of the individual subject rankings.

Over the last six months, HSE has also achieved great success in other rankings as well. The university ranked 83rd in Business and Economics in the THE subject ranking and 181st in Mathematics in the U.S. News Best Global Universities Subject rankings.
