Parsing incremental linguistic input
Instructor: Nina Kazanina (University of Bristol, UK)

Language understanding is grounded in the parser's ability to decode linguistic input that unfolds incrementally in time. The course will focus on two areas, speech perception and sentence processing, which each pose its own set of challenges for the process of decoding meaning from the running input.
In speech perception, the task is to parse the acoustic input into units that can in...terface with the lexicon. In sentence processing, the challenge is to build a hierarchical sentence structure in a way that accounts for the empirically-demonstrated parsing principles (e.g., the parser's prevalent sensitivity to syntactic regulations) and is plausible given constraints on the working memory. The 5-lecture course will examine and will ground relevant linguistic phenomena within a cognitive psychology and neuroscience perspectives.

About the instructor: Nina Kazanina is senior lecturer in the School of Experimental Psychology, University of Bristol specializing in psychology and cognitive neuroscience of language. Her research uses a combination of behavioural techniques and electrophysiology to explore the degree to which the speaker's use of linguistic knowledge guides and expedites their real-time language processing.
