HSE’s Annual Student Research Paper Competition Now Open

HSE’s Annual Student Research Paper Competition Now Open

© HSE University

HSE’s annual student research paper competition has begun accepting applications for the 2019 cycle. The competition is open not only to students of HSE University but to students of any university, both in Russia and abroad. You can submit research papers in Russian or in English. The application deadline is October 15.

About the Competition

The Student Research Paper Competition (SRPC) has been held in support of student research since 2003. The competition was originally intended for HSE students only, but in 2018, the competition became open to all students of Russian and foreign universities.

Now the SRPC offers students a choice of 22 areas in which to apply — from technical sciences and applied mathematics to art and design. In each area, with the exception of mathematics, there are two separate competitions: one for undergraduate students, and one for master’s students and undergraduate students who are graduating in 2019.

Ivan Gruzdev

Director for Internal Monitoring and Student Academic Development

We want everyone to know about the Student Research Paper Competition. Some students tend to underestimate the impact of their experiments or the quality of their term papers or thesis projects, even if they are highly evaluated by their professors. However, it’s been proven that fortune favors the bold. Many winners of past years say that they weren’t sure it was even worth participating. But they gave it a try, and everything ended up working out in their favor.

Who is Eligible and How to Apply

To participate in the competition, you must have authored an original research work and currently be an enrolled undergraduate or master’s student at any Russian or foreign university.

The submission and verification of your paper and your application is completed online, so you can participate in the competition without traveling to Moscow. Familiarize yourself with the rules and recommendations for participating in the competition here.

Submitted papers are assessed anonymously by experts in the submission’s subject field. The competition results will be announced in December, and the awards ceremony will be held in January 2020.

Why Participate?

Competition winners receive a diploma for their portfolios, which grants them points when being considered for higher scholarships and is an asset to any master’s programme application.

Winners who are students or employees of HSE University will receive travel grants for attend a conference or summer school. Winners who are not enrolled at HSE University can take advantage of their grant if they begin studying or working at the university.

Andrew Kozhanov

Director of the Centre for Student Academic Development

Travel grants are valid for two years. Of the 143 winners of the competition last year, 22 students and research assistants at HSE have already used their grants. Some presented papers at conferences, some completed intensive programmes abroad, and others workshopped papers in progress that they hope to turn into publications. In the Science Republic, we support these kinds of applications and try to promote them.

Participants of the competition receive an added bonus from the Polytechnic Museum, which is a competition partner. The museum will award special prizes to winners selected by the museum’s research council.

In addition, events are held annually at HSE for the best participants of the competition. Such events present good networking opportunities. In 2018, HSE hosted the Academicus Modus School in Voronovo, and in 2019, winners were invited to a student research avant-garde retreat held in the Mercury Tower in Moscow.

Detailed information on the terms and conditions of the Student Research Paper Competition is available on its website.
