The degree certificate will state “Master of Applied Mathematics and Informatics.” HSE diploma comes with a European degree certificate, recognized not only in countries across Europe but in most other countries.
There are two main career trajectories for our graduates: business analytics and academic track. As early as during the first semester of studies, many of our students are employed by large business companies as data scientists or data analysts. At the end of the programme, our graduates pursue careers with major Russian and international companies. Students oriented towards an academic career are integrated into the academic environment created by the International Laboratory for Applied Network Research as soon as they begin their studies. Subsequently, graduates can enroll into PhD programs at HSE University and leading Western universities.
The programme is a full-fledged master's degree programme of the National Research University Higher School of Economics accredited by the Russian government.
Yes, we are offering some content from several courses of our programme as part of Coursera Specialization. Having taken these courses, you can earn the “Network Analytics for Business” certificate, which is an excellent start in the exciting field of network analytics. Should you decide that you like what you’ve learned and enrolled in our programme, the course content covered in the specialization will count towards your degree.
The programme will provide a combination of recorded lectures that students watch in their own time and online webinars, where all students gather to discuss the material, ask questions, work in groups, etc. The webinars will be held live with professors and assistants. There will be a combination of online quizzes to test your knowledge and understanding and project work to practice newly developed skills.
The Master's programme length is 2 years. It is possible to earn the degree while working full-time
You can listen to lectures and pass quizzes/online tests in your own time. Webinars will be scheduled to accommodate different time zones as much as possible, and they will be recorded for those who cannot attend the webinars (though we recommend that students participate in live sessions as much as possible). Total weekly time commitment varies greatly, but we expect it to be 7-10 hours per course.
You must successfully complete 120 ECTS credits to get a diploma. Courses are either 3 ECTS credits and last 6 weeks or 6 ECTS credits and last 12 weeks. The exact number of courses depends on your choice of electives, so it can be anywhere from 20 (longer) courses to 32 (shorter) courses.
The students are supposed to take a minimum of 2 courses at a time. However, we will usually offer 3 courses at the same time, so the students will have either a choice of the electives, or can take all 3 courses.
Yes, transfer to the on-campus program is possible in accordance with the HSE student transfer regulations.
Yes, our instructors are involved in both online and on-campus courses.
Yes, there are. Please follow the schedule for instructors. The schedule will be posted on each individual instructor’s HSE web page, and may differ from one semester to another.
Online students have access to the same resources as offline students, i.e. the library, HSE Career Development Centre, Centre for Psychological Counselling, etc.
The student ID card is issued to all students upon request, but can be issued only in person. We are unable to mail student IDs, because they are official identification documents, but students can pick them up should they visit Moscow at any time during their studies.
Yes, we have our own Telegram and other social network channels with program students, alumni and professors. In addition, we plan interactive sessions with on-campus students on a regular basis.
Yes. Online students have the same access to all the benefits as on-campus students. You will be supported by the HSE University Career Office in career development and employment.
Yes, the internship is mandatory, but there are many options to fulfill this requirement. The program offers internships at its own Center for Decision-Making Analytical Support, at the research laboratory, at many other HSE University centers or laboratories, or at one of the partner companies. Students can also fulfill this requirement through the company of their choice.
There is no application fee.
Yes. If some of your qualifications fulfil the programme requirements and your diploma can undergo nostrification, credit transfer may be possible.
The cost of the programme is 1,200,000 RUB for the entire course of study. You do not need to pay the entire cost upfront; it is divided into four equal payments for four semesters of the programme.
Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in any field. You must know English to understand professors and be able to communicate with them.
We welcome all students from all backgrounds, with no prior experience in data science or analytics. Work experience is not required.
If you are successfully admitted to the programme, you will need to submit the following documents to HSE in order to officially enroll. We recommend that you prepare them early:
- Academic diploma with supplements/transcript
- Notarized translation of diploma with supplements/transcript into Russian
- Notarized translation of Passport/ID into Russian

You can check the status of your application in your personal account on the Application portal. You will also get notifications by email as your file is being reviewed and updated.
The programme requirements are flexible and are designed to ensure your success in the programme. If you do not meet some of the requirements we are willing to talk to you about the options about getting the necessary skills/certifications in order to get admitted to the programme at a later date.
The proof of English language proficiency is not required if your native language is English, or if you have studied in English. The hours of English at the university are taken into account. TOEFL, IELTS or equivalent tests are optional. The most successful students have an overall IELTS score of at least 6, though some students can have lower overall scores if their reading comprehension scores are at least 6.
International transcripts can be submitted through your personal account on the Application portal.
There are no additional requirements for international students.
