Аннотация

A course «Qualitative methods of data analysis» is aimed at forming systematic understanding of possibilities of these methods in students, as well as teaching them to apply qualitative and ethnographic methods for research in the area of their interest. Main goal of the course consists in receiving understanding and skills of methods of collection and analysis of qualitative data in the area of social and demographic research, using qualitative and interpretative paradigm of knowledge. In addition, they will receive a lesson on experimental methodology for data collection and analysis. The course will make them acquainant with theory and methodology of named paradighm, main methods and technique of data collection, procedures of making a program of qualitative research, creating its instruments, understanding specifics of field research, analytic procedures and rules for presenting the findings. As a result students will be able to independently apply main principles of sociological research within qualitative paradigm and of experimental methodology, since they will acquire implied knowledge and skills of applying main qualitative methods, as well as will acquire skills of realisation of strategy of qualitative research from the stage of formulating a task to the stage of presenting the results. In addition, they will learn how to combine various methods of qualitative research within one project.
Цель освоения дисциплины

Цель освоения дисциплины

  • as a result, students should know main methods of data collection and analysis in qualitative paradigm - basic concepts and principles of qualitative methodology
  • be able to construct productive research questions using qualitative approach
  • be able to apply the concepts and methods of qualitative approach to their research designs
  • be able to distinguish, collect and apply various kinds of qualitative data - to criticize studies done on the basis of qualitative approach
  • should have the skill to meaningfully construct qualitative research questions - the skill to model research with qualitative research design

  • Organize and analyse the output from the focus groups
  • Organize, conduct, criticese the results of the experiments
  • to construct productive research questions using qualitative approach to apply the concepts and methods of qualitative approach to their research designs; have the skill to meaningfully construct qualitative research questions within the interviews design
  • To distinguish types of text, types of analysis, different conceptual approaches to this. Organiize the of interpretation of the text. Creating theory through analysis of the text.
  • to get the skill to criticize and evaluate the quality of outcome of researches done using observation (as a method) and the skill to meaningfully construct qualitative research questions
  • to know the main methods of data collection and analysis in qualitative paradighm, basic concepts and principles of qualitative methodology
  • to know: - main methods of data collection and analysis in qualitative paradighm - basic concepts and principles of qualitative methodology
  • to use the qualitative approach in which the investigator explores a bounded system (a case) or multiple bounded systems (cases) over time through detailed, in-depth data collection involving multiple sources of information (e.g., observations, interviews, audiovisual material, and documents and reports). to report a case description and case-based themes.

Phenomenology (Husserl, Shutz), M. Weber and the others, ethnomethodology (Harold Garfinkel, Harvey Sachs et al.). Principles and methods of understanding. Hermeneutics and holistic interpretation. Ideographic vs nomothetic methods. Everyday life research. Lifeworld (A. Shutz)/ Social construction of reality. Ethnomethodology. Shared meanings. Strauss and Corbin, grounded theory. Thick description, saturation.
  • Individual interview
Narrative, semi-structured, focused, problem centered, on-line and off-line. Specific characteristics, advantages and drawbacks of the method. Process of choosing the interview type depending on the author goals and objectives. Biographical method. Audio recording and transcribing. Different ways of transcribing. Ethics related to the interview method. Usage of the method in demography (reproductive intentions, migration, lifestyle, etc.).
  • Strategy of qualitative research. Research field. Preparation of qualitative research instruments
Definition of field and access to the field. Conceptual framework and grounded (induced from the data) theory. Continuum from non-participant unstructured observation to the experiment. Case study, ethnographic research, oral history, discourse analysis. Field materials, organisation of data, practice of field research. Stages of field research. Ethics of qualitative research, legal aspects of the author’s right to his or her data and interpretation. Preparation and presentation of the results.
  • Observation (“ethnography” method)
Observation: participant, non-participant, issues of ethics and access to the field. Netnography (observation in the internet, online ethnography). Specifics and limitations of the method of observation (including netnography). Advantages of the method. Usage in demography: practices of migrants’ adaptation, sexual behavior, self-preserving and self destructing behavior, healthy lifestyle, patients’ research.
  • Focus groups and group discussions
History of the method. Focus group types. Dvantages and limitations of the method. On-line focus groups. Areas of focus group usage, including demography (reproductive decisions, contraceptive behavior, patient research, research of groups with specific lifestyles). Specifics of conducting focus groups with informants of different gender and age.
  • Experiment
Field experiment, laboratory experiment. Specifics of planning research using this method. Examples of the research (decision making, gender specifics, men and women in government and administration, girl education and adolescent fertility etc.).
  • Qualitative text analysis
Types of text, types of analysis, different conceptual approaches to this. Units of the analysis, details in analysis and in transcribing. Types of interpretation. Creating theory through analysis of the text. Computer programs for text coding and analysis.
  • Case study
Case study as a methodology, a type of design in qualitative research, an object of study and a product of the inquiry. Qualitative approach in which the investigator explores a bounded system (a case) or multiple bounded systems (cases) over time through detailed, in-depth data collection involving multiple sources of information (e.g., observations, interviews, audiovisual material, and documents and reports). Reporting a case description and case-based themes.Wide range of questions that ask why, what, and how of an issue; to explore, explain, describe, evaluate, and theorize about complex issues in context.
