12th International Summer School in Lapland ‘Politics of Nature’
The Department of Political Science at the National Research University Higher School of Economics (NRU HSE) announces the call for applications to the 12th International Summer School in Lapland ‘Politics of Nature’. The School will be held in Kilpisjärvi (Finland) on 6-14 August 2018 in cooperation with the Aleksanteri Institute at the University of Helsinki and the University of Tromsø – The Arctic University of Norway.
The main topics of the School are:
— NATURE: The Limits of Modernity;
— BORDERS: Geography and Identity;
— NORTH: An Alternative to Modernity?
— THE ARCTIC: Environment and Security.
The program of the School includes:
— lectures, seminars, and group work;
— trekking through the tundra and open-air class at the border of Finland, Norway, and Sweden;
— climbing up the fells;
— trip to a fjord in Norway;
— bicycle rides;
— northern film screenings and discussions.
Students come from Russia, Finland, Norway, and other countries. The working language is English. Participation is equal to 5 ECTS credits.
The School is led by:
— Sergei Medvedev, Professor at the Department of Political Science at the NRU HSE
— Tapani Kaakkuriniemi, Director of the Expertise in Russian and Eastern European Studies (the ExpREES) program at the University of Helsinki
— Christer Pursiainen, Professor of Societal Safety and Environment at the University of Tromsø – The Arctic University of Norway
The School will take place at the Kilpisjärvi Biological Station of the University of Helsinki, situated 400 km beyond the Arctic Circle, near the beautiful lake Kilpisjärvi between the scenic fells Saana and Maala. This place is one of the most beautiful areas in Northern Europe.
Students of any academic level and any university are welcome to apply. The School is part of the international educational project ‘Escapes from Modernity’ .
