Project activity of the students

Every year, on 10th of December, Human Rights day is celebrated across the globe. Students of Public Policy Department at HSE usually organize a series of events to promote human rights in the university, to discuss and share opinions. This year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, “Human Rights Week” is postponed and will be taking place online, but students still found a way to work in the field through their project activity, which is a new mandatory addition to the study plan at HSE.

Project activity of the students

Some of the most prominent Russian HR organizations – “OVD-info”, “Moscow Helsinki Group”, “«Amnesty International Russia” as well as Anti-corruption laboratory in HSE, UNICEF Kazakhstan and some of the european companies offered their platforms and research projects for students to work on in the field of human rights and public policy.

Project vary from theoretical to more practical ones. For example, within the «Bridging actual data and academia» project at OVD-Info, students create reports on databases and different scientific journals in gender issues, urban studies, politics and other topics. Members of «Freedom of assembly: International Experience» project will focus on the idea of freedom of assembly in Russia.

“Moscow Helsinki group” offered to work on a very recent and pressing issue – influence of COVID-19 on a justice system in Russia. Additionally, students are involved in a project concerning regional development of human rights and ombudsman mechanisms. “Amnesty International”, which is a long-time partner of the department, organized two teams: one will collaraborate on organization of HR training event and the other will research topics of domestic violence and freedom of assembly in Russia.

At the end, students of “Public policy and political analysis” are expected to gain a significant experience in the field they are studying in to later use it to advance in their careers.
