HSE team the best debutant of the PAX moot court andamong TOP-5 winning teams

Our team was a debutant on the PAX moot court in Netherlands and immediately won the 5th place in a prestigious competition on private international law

The recent weekend turned out to be lucky for the Law Faculty of the Higher School of Economics. Our team was a debutant on the PAX moot court in Netherlands and immediately won the 5th place in a prestigious competition on private international law. Other contestants were teams from classic European universities, for whom the sphere of EU law and conflict of laws is a question of territorial law, thus HSE’s recognition is so memorable for the university.

The PAX moot court is a specialised competition in private international law which takes place in the Hague. It is organised by the University of Antwerp (Belgium), Sciences Po Law School (France) and T.M.C. Asser Instituut (Netherlands) with supported of the European Union. This year the case was prepared by Hans van Loon (https://www.hcch.net/pt/news-archive/details/?varevent=311), former secretary general of the Hague Conference on Private International Law, and professor Vesna Lazić (https://www.asser.nl/about-the-institute/whos-who/VesnaLazic), senior researcher at the Asser Institute.

Bachelor student Dmitry Litvinov (https://vk.com/appledlm) and students of the master’s program on Private International Law Anastasiia Albukh (https://vk.com/albukh) and Alexandra Ilkevich (https://vk.com/aailkevich) represented the HSE and deserved praise from the jury due to their impeccable knowledge of EU law and private international law. Team coach Dmitry M. Maksimov (https://www.hse.ru/en/staff/maksimov) accepted organizer’s invitation and participated in several rounds of the moot as a judge. “We appreciated the competition and got favorable comparison of our education standards with the same standards of the Pantheon-Sorbonne, Sciences Po, Erasmus University Rotterdam and University of Heidelberg” stated Dmitry M. Maksimov, senior lecturer of the Law Faculty.

“During the private international law course we pay a lot of attention to conventions which were created by the Hague Conference on Private International Law (https://www.hcch.net/en/home). In professional activity we work with apostilled documents and we think that all of it is so far away from us. Fortunately we had an opportunity to see the private international law in action: the Asser Institute (Tobias Asser was a founder of the Hague Conference), the Peace Palace and many celebrities of the law who create new Hague conventions. Such moments resonate in your life and give pride to be a lawyer and a student of the HSE. Such experience provides you with opportunities and knowledge, and when you visit the rank and fashion of private international law you feel yourself as an equal. This is also because of support and kindly advice of our scientific adviser professor Natalia Erpyleva (https://www.hse.ru/en/org/persons/68616)” said Alexandra Ilkevich.
