Curriculum

This master’s course aims to train sociologists who will be able to teach and carry out research and who have for this purpose, in addition to specialist knowledge, excellent communication skills. The programme trains experts in social marketing and public sphere who are able to effectively work in different public organizations, mass communication organizations (analytical departments) and public relations departments.

As part of the specialization, students will obtain skills and knowledge in the following areas:

  • Expert analysis of the social situations which take place in social policy;
  • Presentation of sociological studies;
  • Organization of sociological conferences and other public events;
  • Editing of sociological texts;
  • Organization of the work of professional sociological periodicals;
  • Organization of sociological internet resources and their management;
  • Promotion of sociological knowledge and creation of a sociological culture by means of:
        Creation of texts in the genre of sociologically competent journalism and sociological studies;
        Work with e-media resources (TV, satellite digital TV etc.);
        Creation of presentational and intellectual images (management of impressions).


Students in this specialization are expected to develop the following competencies:

  • Analysis and interpretation of current processes and trends in various sectors of public life;
  • Studies and presentations of existing social problems;
  • Implementation of complex sociological and humanitarian expertise of the solutions which affect the interests of large social groups;
  • Presentation of sociological knowledge as a whole and particularly the results of research in forms available for wider public comprehension.


Career opportunities

Graduates of this programme can choose (1) a career in teaching and research. In addition to universities and academic research sphere, many of the graduates can be employed in (2) the media or corporate PR departments. Experts with social and humanitarian expertise will be in demand in (3) the operational departments of various foundations (research, cultural, ethnic-cultural), (4) public services involved in the problems of employment, ethnic relations as well as (5) political parties and civil NGOs.

The Department of General Sociology and the Community of Professional Sociologists have reached an agreement with a new Internet TV channel, ‘TV-click’, to supply of content in the social analytical block. This can be considered as an important basis for master’s training in the sociology of public sphere (research seminar and laboratory) and could lead to further employment.


The programme consists of three blocks of courses:

(1)  A block of courses on the history and theory of sociology;
(2)  A block of courses focused on the study of the sociological indicators of modern society and the practical problems of modern Russian society;
(3)  Weekly participation in a seminar-laboratory over three semesters, as part of which the students are offered a number of courses focused on practical applications received during the study (special courses and master classes aimed at mastering competencies in communication, presentations, moderation, work with texts and editing etc.).


Organization of the educational processes involves the following:

(1) the students initially create an individual curriculum based on suggestions and recommendations from the head of the master’s programme and their academic supervisors;
(2) minimal set of obligatory courses with a broad choice of electives and additional courses;
(3) pre-graduation vocational training
(4th semester) at one of the vocational training departments of the Faculty of Social Sciences, as well as in media agencies, foundations and other partner organizations.
