Webinar "Endogenous Social Effects: Networks, Game Theory, and Optimization Methods"

Our decisions are often influenced by our environment: classmates influence our academic performance, colleagues influence our work habits, and friends influence our behavior and choices. How can we formally describe this environmental influence—and is it possible to control collective outcomes if the structure of connections between participants is known?

This talk will focus on modern approaches to the analysis of endogenous social effects. It will discuss how endogenous social effects are studied using econometrics, game theory, network analysis, and optimization methods. We will discuss peer effects, why they are difficult to identify using real-world data, and how network models help explain the behavior of agents whose decisions depend on the actions of others. Special attention will be given to network games with linear externalities, as well as network intervention problems—ways to change the outcome of participant interactions using information about the social structure.
