From Regional Studies to Data Science: a student of the master's program spoke about her experience of studying at the program

Tell us about yourself. What did you do before you enrolled?

I am a graduate of the two-degree program of the Higher School of Economics and Gyeonggi University in Regional Studies, specializing in East Asia and South Korea. My research topic is uncertainty in economic policy.

I am now fully focused on my studies, and in the future I plan to enroll in doctoral studies in South Korea.

Why did you choose the program "Data Analytics and Social Statistics" (DASS)?

Back in my bachelor's degree, I studied the economic policy of East Asia using regression analysis methods, but I felt there was a lack of a statistical base. To develop the topic, I needed to go deeper into research methods. The Master's degree program is an ideal fit — it provides both a mathematical foundation and practical skills for working with data.

An important criterion was studying in English: it is a familiar environment for me and an advantage for applying abroad. The program offers exactly what I was looking for — a balance between theory and methods in both science and IT.

What are you studying in the program?

I like the variability: you can learn new tools like Pajek and Gephi or work in a familiar environment (I often chose R for data analysis). This allows you to focus on projects without wasting time learning a new programming language. We go through regression analysis, methods of working with nonparametric data, and the basics of machine learning.

What key skills have you acquired?

The main thing is that I have learned how to choose optimal analysis methods for different types of data. I have deepened my knowledge of statistics and mastered new research approaches, including multidimensional data analysis.

How do you handle the online study format?

In the online format, you can conveniently allocate time between studies and other activities. But it is important not to run the material, otherwise it will be difficult to catch up before the deadlines.

What would you recommend to future students?

Before starting, brush up on math and the basics of Python or R — this will be handy for the first modules. And get involved in your studies right away — the program is intensive, but very useful.

Does the program help in your academic career?

Yes, especially if you plan to continue studying abroad. The English—speaking environment is a big plus: you get used to the terminology and get an advantage when applying. This knowledge is already helping me prepare for my doctoral studies.
