From Medicine to Data Science: a student of the master's program talked about his path to analytics
At the Open Day, student Mikhail Meshkov spoke about his experience of studying at the program.

Международная лаборатория прикладного сетевого анализа: Стажер-исследователь
I was a doctor by primary education, I worked in emergency medicine and telemedicine. I became interested in IT in the field of telemedicine: participated in product development, drafting technical specifications. Gradually, I moved into analytics, and then into medical technology, where I was able to combine medical expertise with data analysis.
I lacked fundamental knowledge in data analysis and machine learning techniques. After studying various programs, I chose this program because of its deep theoretical base - they teach not just tools, but mathematical basics. I was particularly attracted by applied statistics and network analysis, which is not available in other graduate programs.
The program provides three key areas: theory (knowledge of probability theory, linear algebra, statistics), tools (Python, R) and, most importantly, application methods. The most valuable thing for me was bibliometric network analysis, which is a rare field, and the International Laboratory for Applied Network Research is a leader in this field.
Online gives you flexibility: you can watch lectures on the record. But the responsibility for learning is entirely yours, so it's important to manage your time.
Learn the basics of Python and R in advance — it will be easier this way in the first module. In parallel with the main program, you should independently deepen your knowledge in the field of mathematics and data analysis. And most importantly, don't be afraid to interact with teachers and classmates, it helps a lot in your studies.
Yes, and very actively. You find yourself in an environment where serious academic research is being conducted. Teachers and colleagues motivate you to develop in science, publish and participate in conferences.
