An author of these lines got an uneasy task of combining so similar and yet so different thoughts, feelings, memories, opinions and pieces of advice of our amazing group of 4 people that travelled to Berlin last year to study for a double-degree (though everyone had own reasons: get the second diploma, experience the cool life in Berlin, get out of the comfort zone). This article is a must-read for you if you consider becoming a part of this double-degree program. We will try to describe the life and the studies in Berlin as they appeared to us. Maria Zamyatina:I learnt about the internship through our Master’s program website and immediately became interested. OECD is a well-known ‘think-tank’. It is an international organization with a goal to build ‘better policies for better lives’. Being a unique center for knowledge creation and share of best-practices, the organization works to establish norms and find evidence-based solutions to a range of socio-economic and environmental challenges the humanity is currently facing. I was greatly inspired by the immense work the Organisation does to create and share knowledge throughout the societies, and I wanted to be part of it.

Corporate Culture on the Spot: Creativity Seminar at Yandex

On December 4, 2018, 2nd year students of the ISSEK master’s programme “Governance of STI” visited Yandex headquarters – that was the Seminar “Corporate Culture, encouraging creativity and innovation” within the course by Mikhail Gershman “Managing Creativity and Innovation”. The visit was organized with the help of Ekaterina Shor – a 2018-year graduate of the master’s programme and an employee at Yandex.

Most of those travelling to Berlin do not like the city, because there is not so much architectural heritage or historical attractions besides Reichstag and the Wall. After living there for a year there is the feeling that Berlin is not about sightseeing but about the vibe, feeling of freedom and cosmopolitanism, street art and techno music.

Master’s programme held 3 rd graduation ceremony for the students receiving their degrees. Totally 35 graduates were honored to obtain their master’s diplomas, with 9 students as participants of the double degree programme with TU Berlin. The Academic supervisor of the programme Dirk Meissner, ISSEK Deputy Director Alexander Sokolov, Head of the Department for Economy and Science from the German Embassy Thomas Graf and Coordinator of the Double Degree programme from TUB Jan Kratzer congratulated the master’s students, expressed their wishes for the future endeavors and encouraged to take advantage of all further challenges through the prism of knowledge acquired at the programme.

Get ready to innovate

English language Master’s Programme 'Governance of Science, Technology and Innovation' of the Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge opens new 5th enrolment. 18 April there was the first meeting with the interested candidates. Future innovators, high-tech startup creators and policy makers in S&T took part in the interactive foresight session — in a very uncommon format for the Open Doors Day. Such communication was of great value for all the participants, and made some of them come again — with the applications for admission.

How to Manage Complexity?

The knowledge acquired at the English-language Master's programme of the Higher School of Economics “Governance of Science, Technology and Innovation” allows to launch new value chains, create knowledge-intensive businesses, and open new markets, in general, the power of science changes reality. During the Open-Door Day, the prospective students discovered what is needed to be considered for this programme and to realise the maximum potential of the programme.

Science Diplomacy as an Emerging Topic: Some Insights from Professor Pierre-Bruno Ruffini

On 21 February, 2017, Pierre-Bruno Ruffini, Professor of Economics, University of Le Havre (France) and previously Counselor for Science and Technology at the Embassy of France in Russia (2007-2010) and Italy (2010-2013), delivered the open lecture «Science Diplomacy – Basic Concepts and Key Issues» under the HSE Master`s programme «Governance of Science, Technology and Innovation» for students, scholars and practitioners.

Essay Competition Among Second-Year Master Students

In terms of the Research Seminar course, two guest scholars gave an academic speech to the second-year Master students of the “Governance of Science, Technology and Innovation” programme. Prof. Jeong Dong Lee (Seoul National University, Korea) devoted his presentation to capability transition failure from implementation capability and concept design capability as a source of middle income trap. Prof. Liu Youfa (Shanghai Institute of International Studies, China) discussed relations between China and Russia through the prism of One Belt One Road Initiative. Seven groups of students wrote a group academic essay related to one of these topics. Three essays were awarded  "Best Academic Essay" certificates and online publication.
