BF Building face: Face Multimodal Management System of Home Community

Concept

Within the ‘City Project: Communities’ module of the Master’s programme ‘Prototyping future cities’, students study the past and present patterns of everyday life in selected community in Moscow, and then propose new scenarios and activities that will be made possible thanks to the use of technology. For the final review students prepare a digital presentation, a short video about their project and a demonstration of their prototype in action.

BF Building Face’ project was done by Anna Budnikova and Valeriya Miftakhova, the second-year students of the Master’s programme, within ‘City project: communities’ course and Technology Research’ seminar. ‘BF Building Face’ product is the opportunity for communities to manage homes as they need. The authors of the project propose to create smart communities, but not smart houses. Rethinking existing smart services, students keep the smart-based content but humanize it.

Тhе project is based on the Mark Granovetter’s concept of `The Strength of Weak Ties`. This type of ties between neighbors are more important than the strong ones between friends, relatives for community formation. However, today’s environment and typical housing system does not allow to build the weak ties in communities, as a result, people are not able to trust, unite and represent their interests and needs together. Such a concept would not create a "big family" within the courtyards, but an active community that has the ability to cooperate to defend common interests and rights.

Urbanists love the `community` word very much... It seems that they are fighting for a peaceful community for skating together or growing flowers. But ... the topic is deeply politicized

How Does It Work?

The BF as the interactive panel inside the apartment block (for example, near the elevator) is integrated with a chat bot (accessible with any mobile device).

BF is based on 3 key project principles:

  • balance of the voting right system and centralized management;
  • support system based on Artificial Intelligence (AI);
  • system modularity.

The BF provides automated quick services (i.e. call the master, ask for legal support etc.), digitized paper processes (bot-based voting system, etc.), integration with existing services like Airbnb, YouDo to localize the services.

Consensus system allows to digitize paper-based personal meeting of homeowners. It allows to create vote and vote without time loss and excessive personal contact. System provides the ability to file applications, complaints, requests, etc. in electronic form with a transparent way of controlling retroactive actions, as well as legal support if necessary.

The students propose the network of BF manager systems including the wing-floor-entrance-block devices that have different functions at each level depending on specific needs. The Neighbors` Digital Assistant can be installed by existing management companies with monthly service cost. However, the last stage of project development is identified as the new Digital Management Company.
