'You Gain Extensive Knowledge'
Zhu Yang about her experience studying in the Master’s Programme 'International Trade Policy'
What was your motivation to pursue a master’s degree in Russia? And how do you find studying and living in Moscow so far?
Here people are friendly to the Chinese, and the living environment is safe and suitable for students studying abroad. In addition, studying in Russia is the most cost-effective. Compared with Europe and the United States, where a relatively equal level of education is available, the overall cost is lower in Russia. My impression when I came to Moscow is that the environment is wonderful; the transportation infrastructure in particular is convenient and cheap. The academic atmosphere is great, everybody expresses oneself, therefore you gain extensive knowledge.
Why, out of all the master’s programmes offered by the leading Russian universities, did you decide to apply to the Master of International Trade Policy at the HSE?
For personal reasons I decided to study economics as a postgraduate. I searched many universities. Firstly, the economics department of HSE ranks among the top 50 in the world, and the school is very strong. In addition, HSE mainly teaches in English and Russian, and all the teachers and students have a high level of English. For me who just came to Moscow, I can use English to get into a learning state faster, and improve my Russian level while using English. When applying, the school website information was very clear, and I could complete the application on my own according to the procedure.
Has your time here met your expectations?
The lecturers here are very knowledgeable. During discussion classes you prepare a presentation by yourself and communicate with others, and then the professor asks questions. During the discussions we learn a lot. I like teachers' approach to teaching here. I can learn a variety of things in a relaxed and harmonious academic atmosphere.
Can you share with us some of your most exciting or challenging moments?
What impressed me the most was the first time I gave a presentation. Before I went on stage I was very nervous and afraid that the content I prepared would not meet the requirements of the lecturer. After the presentation the professor gave me an affirmation and told me that the presentation was to tell everyone what you wanted to say. There was no fixed answer. Then the professor put forward his own opinion, and we discussed. That made me feel that the presentation was not so terrible. Later I was no longer afraid and was able to calmly complete the presentation and answer questions.
Which courses and lecturers do you find the most exciting, and why?
Professor Glazatova taught 'National Regulation of Business by Means of Trade Policy Measures', which impressed me most of all. The professor explained the relevant information about Russia, but in the discussion class, I was allowed to share relevant information about China, and she helped me compare and summarize China and Russia. She said that for Chinese students, it is necessary to understand relevant Chinese policies as well, which will be more helpful for my future development.
In your opinion, what are the most important and useful skills you've acquired while being a HSE student?
During my two years at HSE I have gained both knowledge and confidence. It is important, because now I more confidently present my own opinions. I am full of positive energy. With a solid knowledge reserve and self-confidence, I believe that I will success in the future, whether it is in my studies or in life.
