The influence of macroeconomic determinants on the profitability of Russian banks

At the XVII April International Academic Scientific Conference on Economic and Social Development (April 19-22, 2016) Moscow, Russia Veronika Belousova, Alexander Karminsky and Ilya Kozyr presented a paper 'Macroeconomic and Institutional Determinants of Banking Profitability: Evidence from Russia'.

The paper analyzed the key factors, affecting the profitability of commercial banks. There were identified such examples as the exchange rate, the level of financial intermediation and the index of rail traffic.

It was determined during the study that the form of ownership has a significant influence on the banks’ profitability: state banks turned up to be the most profitable, while foreign banks – the least. Moreover, banks in the central region obtaining an undeveloped branch network showed the lowest profitability compared with the multiregional ones.
