New English-language Master's Programme in Big Data Systems
This year, the HSE Faculty of Business Informatics is launching an English-language master's programme in Big Data Systems. Scholarships are available, particularly for selected applicants who participate in the Olympiad, a competition that is open to students and graduates of university undergraduate and specialist courses from throughout Russia, the CIS, and the Baltic countries. The registration deadline for the Olympiad is March 12, 2014.
The recent expansion in the quantity of data collection devices and technologies has resulted in a dramatic increase in the total amount of data being stored worldwide (it is already being calculated in zettabytes). Demand exists for professionals capable of converting data storage systems into company 'information assets' which can be used to generate profit and respond promptly to change. “This is what the Big Data Systems concept is all about”, explains Professor Svetlana Maltseva, Head of the Big Data Systems Programme.
A few universities in other countries offer educational courses in this area, but they focus mainly on its mathematical aspects. However, little is currently being done to study business as a system with an advanced information infrastructure that allows management processes to be automated. Therefore, the Big Data Systems programme, designed by the HSE Faculty of Business Informatics, focuses primarily on effective business use of this technology. This globally competitive programme is a recipient of the 2013 IBM Faculty Awards.
The training will be practice-oriented thanks to the Faculty's extensive partnerships with leading Russian and international companies; the research performed by students as part of their training will deal mostly with practical, hands-on issues.

The curriculum includes two elective blocs (technology and management), from which the master's students will select disciplines to match their individual baseline competencies, and five core disciplines (systems analysis and organizational design; economic and mathematical modeling; enterprise architecture modeling; data analysis methods and big data in business intelligence; big data system design and integration). A special adaptation course will also be available.
The programme is taught entirely in English, enabling students to participate in joint research projects and to benefit from exchange programmes and internships with foreign universities. A number of courses will be delivered by teachers from foreign universities.
The graduates' potential employers include major companies and organizations involved in storing large amounts of data (including external data centres), and also IT companies and research institutions. However, competence in big data management is becoming increasingly relevant in other spheres, so programme graduates can expect to find work in IT and analytical departments of companies and organizations across all sectors. Since the programme’s content is so versatile, graduates will be able to secure employment in Russia, where specialists in this area are in high demand, and elsewhere in the world.
Admission will be based either on the results of the Olympiad or on the applicant’s portfolio consisting of a letter of motivation, proof of basic education (with a preference for those trained in mathematics, computer science, economics, and management), and the applicant's research papers and professional certificates, if any. "We no longer require letters of recommendation," says Professor Maltseva, "because too often they refer to the applicant's qualities as a person rather than his or her experience or work history."
In 2014, the programme will admit 15 students on a scholarship basis; fee-based tuition is also available.
The graduates of the master's programme will be able to continue their studies in the HSE's postgraduate programme.

On June 29, the third graduation ceremony for the double-degree Master’s programme in Big Data Systems (HSE, Russia) and Information Systems Management (UAS Technikum Wien, Austria) was hosted at the Austrian Ambassador’s Residence in Moscow. Dr. Hartmut Koller-Lenhardt, Chancellor at the Embassy of Austria in Moscow, gave the opening address.
