MIEM Tech Day at Pokrovka: Exploring HSE’s Engineering DNA Together

On May 26, 2026, the central atrium of the building at 11 Pokrovsky Bulvar will host the annual large-scale festival of engineering developments created by project teams from the HSE Tikhonov Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics (HSE MIEM). The programme includes presentations of the best student technological projects, stands from partner companies and joint workshops, a lecture series featuring practising engineers, a round table on the development of engineering education, and presentations of MIEM master’s degree programmes.
As usual, at the end of May HSE MIEM invites everyone interested in modern technologies: students, school pupils, experts, practising engineers, and business representatives. MIEM Tech Day is a large-scale technology exhibition where participants will showcase working devices, applications, and software solutions created in collaboration with MIEM partner companies. Among them are VK, MTS, T2, Beeline, Nanotronika, EkoNiva, InfoWatch, Ozon Tech, Bureau 1440, RC Module and other organisations from science-intensive and high-tech sectors, as well as major Russian research centres and divisions of HSE University.
Student Projects
The main atrium space will host the MIEM TechnoShow—the centrepiece of Tech Day and a showroom for the best developments of the institute’s student teams. All projects are implemented within the framework of MIEM’s unique project-based educational model.
This year, more than 40 projects were selected, representing all the key areas of project-based education at the institute: space technologies, electronics, telecommunications, information security, agricultural and video technologies, robotics, and business solutions. The main criteria for participation are the social significance of the project and its readiness for demonstration and practical application.

All visitors to the TechnoShow will be able to test student products. Among the 2026 projects are a web service with a catalogue of periodic orbits, the Open vAIR task planner for automating routine operations, educational chatbots, the collectible card game Cyber Frontier designed to teach basic cybersecurity skills, a hand-vein biometric system, a social network for quickly sharing musical preferences, a unified HSE football portal, a milk transportation planning service, a ‘cat photo trap’ for detecting animals in distress, a digital ecosystem for redistributing surplus food between users, and many others. A separate section is devoted to projects developed by the HSE & VK Engineering and Mathematics School.
Many of the developments presented in the showroom are continuations of long-term projects launched more than a year ago and carried out with external financial support from industrial partners or through grants from the Russian Science Foundation.
Valeria Nemna
‘One distinctive feature of our project-based educational model is the large number of integrated developments created by mixed student teams,’ explained Valeria Nemna, Deputy Director of the Project Management Centre at the HSE Tikhonov Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics. ‘As a rule, these teams include both junior and senior students from different educational programmes. This combination of competencies within a single field, together with a shared working infrastructure and clearly formulated goals from the outset, makes it possible to create high-quality digital and hardware–software products, as well as to conduct science-intensive research. Such projects usually last several years and require considerable effort, but ultimately result in sophisticated, integrated and genuinely innovative solutions. The best of them will be included in the TechnoShow programme.’
Among the projects to be showcased are the CAVISE platform for comprehensive modelling of connected autonomous vehicles, a smile-detection system for filming the Big Show project, and a network television complex with robotic cameras for remote filming and automated video production.
Several additional projects will be presented by the MIEM Student Design Bureau, which brings together students passionate about applied hardware development.
MIEM Workshop Projects
Joint workshops developed in cooperation with technology leaders represent another unique collaboration format that is actively expanding at HSE MIEM.
Dmitry Kovalenko
According to Dmitry Kovalenko, Director of HSE MIEM, ‘this format is beneficial both for business and for education.’ ‘A company can delegate the task of testing a relevant technological or business hypothesis to student teams, while the university gains a powerful tool for enabling students to test and apply their knowledge and skills on real industrial projects through direct interaction with industry experts. This mechanism is particularly important for master’s students and senior undergraduate and specialist-degree students,’ he noted.
As part of Tech Day, four MIEM workshops will be presented: the HSE & VK Engineering and Mathematics School, the T2 workshop, the Ozon Tech information security workshop, and the MTS workshop ‘Intelligent Solutions in Communication Networks.’
Partner Alley and Lecture Series
Another new feature of this year’s event is the Partner Alley, where HSE MIEM’s leading partner companies—technology leaders in fields such as banking, retail, microelectronics, telecommunications, information security, and manufacturing (including food production)—will be represented. MIEM works with all of these companies on joint educational, research, and commercial projects. HSE students and other visitors to the event will be able to learn more about the companies, internships, and joint programmes with MIEM and HSE, as well as speak directly with representatives of potential employers.
The main stage will host a lecture series in which experts from technology companies will discuss major trends in engineering and IT and share their experience of implementing large-scale industrial projects.

MIEM’s Master’s Programmes
Another stand will be dedicated to MIEM’s master’s programmes, presenting all 13 of the institute’s programmes, including those launching in 2026.
‘Today, MIEM’s master’s education is among the most advanced in the country,’ emphasised Dmitry Kovalenko, Director of HSE MIEM. ‘In recent years, we have significantly expanded both the range and content of our programmes to reflect the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence technologies and the development of the information security and telecommunications sectors. In particular, in 2025 MIEM established the School of Cybersecurity Studies, bringing together four master’s programmes dedicated to training specialists in data protection. I invite all prospective applicants to attend our Tech Day and receive the most comprehensive and up-to-date information about our programmes and admissions directly from programme academic supervisors and current students.’
Round Table on Engineering Education
MIEM is the engineering wing of HSE University. During the round table at Durasov House experts will discuss the development of engineering education in Russia and the organisation of cooperation between engineering universities and business. The organisers, student project teams, workshop groups, and the institute’s partners have also prepared interactive technological activities, souvenirs, and competitions with prizes from MIEM, HSE University, and partner companies.

This finding offers a fresh perspective on the molecular mechanisms underlying tumour development and on the search for disease biomarkers. The results have been published in PeerJ.

Researchers Discover How Spelling Errors Slow Down Reading in Russian
Psycholinguists from the Centre for Language and Brain at HSE University–St Petersburg have shown that words that are frequently misspelled are processed more slowly by readers, even when presented with the correct spelling. The researchers confirmed this effect for the first time using Russian-language materials and found that response speed is most strongly linked to how confidently individuals can distinguish the correct spelling of a word from an incorrect one. The study has been published in The Mental Lexicon.
Scientists Discover Why Europium 'Misbehaves'
Europium is a rare-earth metal responsible for the pure red glow in displays and other luminescent materials. For a long time, however, it refused to emit light when surrounded by certain organic molecules known as acylpyrazolone ligands. Chemists have now uncovered the reason: in europium complexes with these ligands, a 'black window' appears—a charge-transfer state in which the energy absorbed by the ligand is dissipated as heat rather than emitted as light. Understanding this mechanism opens the way to designing more efficient red-emitting materials for displays, fluorescent thermometers, and chemical sensors. The results have been published in Dalton Transactions.
HSE Economists Reveal How the Wage Gap Emerges Among Vocational School Graduates
HSE researchers examined the careers of 600,000 graduates of Russian secondary vocational education programmes and found that at the start of their careers, the gender wage gap reaches 23%, doubling after three years. This disparity is largely due to male and female students choosing different occupations when enrolling in vocational schools. These were the findings made by Sergey Roshchin, Natalya Yemelina, and Ksenia Rozhkova from of the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences. The article has been published in Educational Studies.
HSE Researchers Make Aldehydes Perform Dual Function
Chemists from HSE University have discovered a way to carry out a reductive addition reaction without using an external reducing agent. Instead, the required 'resource' is supplied by the aldehyde itself, one of the reaction participants. This approach helps prevent unwanted side reactions, reduces toxicity, and simplifies the production and synthesis of organic molecules, including those used in the manufacture of medicines. The study has been published in Journal of Catalysis.
Tabular Data Anonymisation Solution for Safe Use in AI Systems Developed at HSE University
The AI and Digital Science Institute at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science has developed a tabular data anonymisation service designed to prepare corporate datasets for use in analytics and AI applications. The solution can identify personal data in structured datasets, apply consistent and reproducible anonymisation rules, and generate the artifacts required for quality control, auditing, and subsequent use of data in secure environments.
HSE Scientists Develop Method to Compress Large Language Models Without Losing Quality
Researchers from the AI and Digital Science Institute at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new compression method for large language models such as GPT and LLaMA that reduces their size by 25–36% without additional training or significant loss of accuracy. This is the first approach to use mathematical transformations—specifically, rotations of model weights—to make models more amenable to compression with structured matrices. The study results have been published in ACL Findings 2025. The code is available on GitHub.
