6%

of school-age students participate in scientific and technical clubs, especially in mathematics and computer science. These pursuits turned out to be rather uncommon.

The majority of students – two thirds – participate in sports clubs.

The second most popular clubs are in the arts: playing musical instruments, singing, drawing and acting (a quarter of those surveyed reported going to these clubs). One tenth (about 9%) of respondents study foreign languages.

This information is presented in a study of supplementary education for school-age students that was conducted by Daniil Alexandrov, head of the Research Laboratory of Sociology in Education and Science (HSE Campus in St. Petersburg), and Valeria Ivaniushina, Senior Research Fellow.

The report, entitled ‘Sociology of Education and Science’, will be covered in more detail October 17 on the OPEC.ru website (in Russian).
