Faculties Still Expanding at HSE
As part of organizational reform at HSE, two more ‘big’ faculties are being created – the Faculty of Economic Sciences and the Faculty of Humanities. These faculties will include educational and research divisions in their corresponding fields. Changes will also take place in the structure of HSE’s Moscow State Institute of Electronics and Mathematics.
Structural changes at the Higher School of Economics began in the spring of 2014. The university began creating ‘big’ faculties responsible for carrying out the university’s educational programmes. The faculties include various types of schools, as well as core academic research centres and continuing education divisions. The university’s new structure has become a part of the road map approved by the Russian government last year to raise the HSE’s ability to compete at the international level.
About the Economics Faculty
The restructuring of HSE’s faculties began specifically with the university’s economists, who along with departments saw schools emerge that bring together specialists and instructors working in ‘neighbouring’ economic areas. These changes have now logically culminated in the Faculty of Economics, which is becoming the core of the ‘big’ faculty of economic sciences. The Faculty includes schools in five areas – theoretical economics, applied economics, finance, mathematics and statistics and data analysis. All of the departments, aside from companies’ joint faculties, ‘melt’ together in the corresponding schools. In addition, the Faculty will include several research and project laboratories.
The International College of Economics and Finance (ICEF) will become a division affiliated with the Faculty. In practice, ICEF will maintain its autonomy, so nothing will change for its students academically. Several academic institutes – the Centre of Development Institute and the Centre for Institutional Studies – and two international laboratories – the International Laboratory of Quantitative Finance and the Laboratory of Stochastic Analysis and its Applications – will receive the status of affiliated members.
The dean of the faculty of economic sciences will be Oleg Zamulin, who is now the head of the Faculty of Economics.
About the Humanities Faculty
The ‘big’ faculty of humanities will bring together historians, culturologists, philosophers and language experts. The united faculties and divisions will receive the status of schools, largely keeping their autonomy. The School of Historical Sciences, School of Cultural Studies, School of Philology and School of Philosophy will be created as part of the faculty’s structure.
The Faculty of Humanities will also include several laboratories, as well as academic and research centres. The faculty will also have associated members, including the Department of Foreign Languages and the Institute for Theoretical and Historical Studies in the Humanities.
The faculty will be headed by Alexey Rutkevich, the current dean of the Faculty of Philosophy.
About the Engineering Divisions
Organizational changes have also affected HSE's engineers, as faculties in Moscow State Institute of Electronics and Mathematics will be transformed into schools. The School of Electrical Engineering will be headed by Boris Lvov, the School of Applied Mathematics by Alexander Belov, and the School of Computer Engineering by Vladimir Starykh, all of whom are currently deans of the faculties undergoing transformation. The schools will include various research laboratories and joint departments with leading Russian engineering firms and research institutions.

HSE to Open Department of Geography and Geoinformatics Technology
The department is being created in collaboration with the Institute of Geography at the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) and will focus on problems of geoinformatics, climate change and socio-economic development. The department’s first educational programme in geography at HSE may open in 2020.
