HSE St. Petersburg and University of Jyväskylä to Launch International Mobility Cooperation
The Department of History at the Higher School of Economics – St. Petersburg and the University of Jyväskylä (Finland) will begin student and teacher international mobility cooperation for the 2015/2016 academic year.
The University of Jyväskylä (JYU) has received funding from the Centre for International Mobility (CIMO) of Finland to intensify international student and teacher exchange with HSE St. Petersburg through the Finnish-Russian Student and Teacher Exchange Network (FIRST).
The funding primarily aims to encourage student mobility between HSE and JYU by providing Finnish and Russian students with opportunities to study history in a new academic environment and increase their intercultural understanding. During the 2016 spring semester, HSE students in the Master`s Programme in Applied and Interdisciplinary History ‘Usable Pasts’ will have the opportunity to spend one semester at HSE’s partner university in Jyväskylä, which is listed among the best universities in northern Europe. The FIRST grant provides an allowance of 580 euros per month for the entire period of study. Finnish students, in turn, are expected to study for one semester at HSE St. Petersburg in the ‘Usable Pasts’ programme.
The grant is also intended to support teacher mobility between HSE and JYU in the form of short-term (4-7 days) teaching visits. HSE historians will teach an intensive course at JYU. Moreover, curricular cooperation between HSE and JYU is also being supported.
The Department of History at the HSE St. Petersburg and the Department of History and Ethnology at the University of Jyväskylä (JYU) will jointly develop a new intensive course on the history of Europe-Russia relations in the 20th Century. The course is intended for students at the Master’s level in both Finland (about 20 students) and those who study in the ‘Usable Pasts’ programme. However, it will be open to undergraduate students in history and to students from other HSE departments upon registration. Cooperation between the two universities in developing this joint course on contemporary history is expected to increase understanding among both JYU and HSE St. Petersburg students and researchers. The course will be hosted by HSE and will be taught jointly by the faculty members from HSE and JYU (Associate Professor Julia Lajus, Senior Lecturer Elena Kochetkova and Associate Professor Simo Mikkonen). The course will consist of lectures, seminars, group exercises and field trips within St. Petersburg.
FIRST is a prestigious programme that promotes partnership and reciprocal mobility of students and teachers between institutions of higher education in Finland and northwestern Russia. The Master`s Programme in Applied and Interdisciplinary History ‘Usable Pasts’ is currently the only educational programme in Russia offers a joint Russian-Finnish intensive course in history.

The Brain in Space: Investigating the Effects of Long Spaceflights on Space Travellers
As part of an international project conducted with the participation of Roscosmos and the European Space Agency, a team of researchers used differential tractography to analyse dMRI scans ofcosmonauts’ brains and found significant changes in brain connectivity, with some of the changes persisting after seven months back on Earth.
