Classical Studies Discussed at HSE Perm

Research and study activities continue at HSE Perm even during vacations. A Summer School in Classical Studies, ‘Political Regimes of the Antiquity 3: Political Evolution and Socio-economic Development’ started on August 26 at the Perm campus. Researchers from Ekaterinburg, Tobolsk, Moscow, and Durham are all taking part in the event.

This event, organized by The Group for Historical Research is being held at the HSE campus in Perm for the third time. It includes morning and evening sessions, and discussion of papers and various topical problems in the classical studies field. This year, participants will look at how socio-economic development influenced political evolution in the ancient world.

The morning session on the first day of the School opened with a presentation by the renowned Russian scholar, member of the Russian Association of Classical Period Researchers and the British Institute of Archaeology in Ankara, Professor Maria Lapteva from Tobolsk. Valery Gushchin, Associate Professor at the Department of Humanities and researcher at the HSE-Perm Group for Historical Research then went on to speak about the models of economic behaviour among the aristocracy and demos in Athens.

The afternoon session was dedicated to a presentation by Peter Rhodes, a prominent British Classics scholar, Fellow of the British Academy, and Emeritus Professor at Durham University. The professor spoke about the process of public fund distribution in Athens.

Each of the papers provoked lively discussions, with school participants sharing their views on these issues.
