HSE Day Offers Something for Everyone
Russian students and teachers were not the only ones to actively participate in HSE Day on September 9; many foreigners who study or work at the university took part as well. Numerous activities enriching the celebration could be enjoyed without any knowledge of Russian — for example, Speed Dating, Dance Battle, and a variety of sporting events. However, some sites during the festival had a special English-language programme.
The Office of Internationalization set up a Russian tearoom for foreign students and international experts, where they could try Russian bubliks – bread rolls that are similar to bagels – and tea from a real Russian samovar. Trivia games gave visitors the opportunity to show their knowledge of Russia. Buddies, HSE students who help international students get accustomed to life in Moscow and to studying at HSE, played an active role. Visitors could even practice their Russian by competing in a repetition of Russian tongue twisters! The tearoom also served as a place where visitors could wish HSE a happy birthday in their own language.
Song and dance competitions, as well as a raffle for foreign students and buddies, were held in Gorky Park near the central fountain. The rain did not keep participants from battling for tickets to the evening Splean concert and other prizes. The winner of the song contest was Lisse van Vliet of the University of Groningen, who performed a Dutch song superbly. An international couple — Arina Goldina (a second-year undergraduate who is a member of the buddies group from the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs) and Ivan Flores Hurtado (a Mexican exchange student) — coped remarkably with the dance competition where they had to improvise to five tunes — lambada, Swan Lake, tango, gopak and a song by Michael Jackson.
HSE Open Talks drew those who like serious discussions to lectures by international faculty members, including Emiliano Catonini from ICEF, Matteo Feurra, Michael Rochlitz, Lodhi Iftikhar, and Tim Jaekel from the Faculty of Social Sciences, and Yuval Weber from the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs. The topics varied greatly, including (ir)rationality in economics, global politics, neuroscience, semi-legal markets in North Korea, public administration, and the effects of public discourse on conversations with expats. A lively discussion among the audience ensued, which brought numerous questions for lecturers. Audience members also requested lecturers’ advice, additional lectures on their subjects and information on how to enrol in their courses.
