HSE to Partner with Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais
On September 24, an HSE delegation visited the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (Belo Horizonte, Brazil). UFMG Rector Jaime Ramirez and the HSE Vice Rector for International Affairs, Sergei Erofeev, signed a Memorandum of Understanding that provides for collaboration in the areas of undergraduate and postgraduate studies, research, and student exchanges. It also supports summer and winter schools and partnerships in the form of co-supervision.
‘What brings us to UFMG is not only the excellence of research. We are impressed with how the institution prioritizes internationalization, which is also important for us. We want to make real progress in identifying research,’ said Erofeev, who was accompanied by Michael Komarov, International Relations Director of the School of Business and Management, and Alyona Sutormina, Partnership Development Manager at HSE.
Jaime Ramirez emphasized the great potential that an effective partnership between the institutions has in areas such as economic and social sciences. In addition, he stressed that HSE is among the five institutions considered to be of strategic importance by UFMG in terms of intensifying cooperation with Russia. ‘We are investing in relations with BRICS countries, which will enable us to discuss global issues on a much stronger basis’, said Prof Ramirez.
The Russian delegation also met with the heads of various divisions of UFMG (undergraduate studies, graduate studies, research, continuing professional development, culture, interdisciplinary studies and international relations). They also met with experts in specific areas to discuss avenues for cooperation.
UFMG traces its history back to 1927 when Universidade de Mindas Gerais was established bringing together four institutions of higher learning that existed in Belo Horizonte at that time. The current name, UFMG, was adopted in 1965. The university is currently ranked 41 in QS Brics, has almost 50,000 students and offers more than 80 educational programmes. There are 600 research laboratories with 2,500 scholars.

The Brain in Space: Investigating the Effects of Long Spaceflights on Space Travellers
As part of an international project conducted with the participation of Roscosmos and the European Space Agency, a team of researchers used differential tractography to analyse dMRI scans ofcosmonauts’ brains and found significant changes in brain connectivity, with some of the changes persisting after seven months back on Earth. The Majority of Russians Do Not Support Microchip Implants
