'The Winter School Is What Led to My Firm Decision to Go to HSE'

On February 4-8 of next year, the Faculty of Mathematics is hosting a Winter School at Voronovo, a special conference centre in the Moscow region with lodging and recreational facilities.

The Schools are aimed at individuals who are thinking of applying to one of HSE’s master’s programmes and who want to get first-hand experience with what graduate study at HSE entails. This is why the educational portion of all Winter Schools includes presentations by the various faculties on their master’s programmes, as well as discussions with faculty staff.

The Winter School hosted by the Faculty of Mathematics also features various lectures and presentations. Key lecturers include the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, Vladlen Timorin, who will talk about ‘Dynamics and Fractals’; International Laboratory of Representation Theory and Mathematical Physics researcher Ian Marshall, whose topic is Music and Mathematics; another International Laboratory of Representation Theory and Mathematical Physics researcher, Alexander Bufetof, who will discuss tessellations and Markov processes; and many more. A full list of lectures can be found on the School’s website. The Winter Schools will also host informal discussions on mathematics education around the world and current problems in mathematics.

In addition, under the guidance of their instructors, Winter School participants will be able to practice taking the entrance exams required for the faculty’s master’s programme. The School will showcase the Mathematics programme, of which Yuly Ilyashenko is the Academic Supervisor, and the Mathematical Physics programme, whose supervisor is Igor Krichever.

I found out about the School from a former participant. To be honest, if it hadn’t been for him, I would have never thought that such schools exist for people who are applying to master’s programmes. I figured it’s worth a shot. At the time, a fair number of the people I knew from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology had studied in various HSE programmes, and I already had a decent idea of what and how they taught in the faculty. Also, just talking with the faculty’s professors made a huge impression on me. They are great.

Who is the Winter School good for? For those who want to study in the Mathematics Faculty, of course. Every math faculty in the world is unique (at least in regards to their size compared with other faculties), and the Winter School allows you to get an idea of exactly what awaits you in the field.

Several participants at the School were worried they didn’t have an adequate background in mathematics. I can say you shouldn’t worry about this – those gaps in knowledge get filled in. The main thing is to want to work. I also recommend making the best use of your time at the school, and for example, not sit in your room every evening after your daily schedule is over.

I made the firm decision of going specifically to HSE while I was at the Winter School. Really, it almost dissuaded me from applying for the Mathematics and Mathematical Physics programme since I had started thinking about applying for an alternative programme in the faculty.

Of course, it’s impossible to prepare for entrance exams in the three or four days that the School takes place, but no one made this their goal. I learned about a ton of formalities like the day the Olympiad and exams take place, as well as the overall application procedure. I also did prep work for the Olympiad, which gave me a certain sense of psychological and moral support.

Springer Nature, HSE and Skoltech to Publish Book Series in Mathematics

Moscow Lectures, a new series of books in English, is set to be published by Springer Nature. The series is issued jointly by HSE and Skoltech, and its Editor-in-Chief is Alexey Gorodentsev, Professor at the HSE Faculty of Mathematics. Twelve volumes are currently in preparation and the first volume will be published at the beginning of June 2018. The series builds on the outstanding research and education in the field of mathematics in Moscow. HSE Students Win in Vojtěch Jarník International Mathematical Competition

A team of HSE students has sucessfully returned after taking part in the 28th Vojtěch Jarník International Mathematical Competition, held in the Czech Republic. The competition has been held annually since 1991 by the University of Ostrava in the Czech Republic. Students compete in two age groups: category I (junior group) is for first and second-year students under 22 years and category II (senior group) is for older students.

Q.E.D. Mathematics Test at HSE

On March 24, a mathematics test 'Q.E.D.' (quod erat demonstrandum, meaning 'which was to be proved') will take place, organized by Yandex. It is open to anyone who is interested. As on previous occasions, HSE will be one of the test sites.

Moscow Mathematical Journal Named Most Influential Russian Journal in Mathematics of 2017

The recipients of the annual Web of Science Awards are the most influential scientists, scientific organizations and publications of the year. The Moscow Mathematical Journal has made it into the top quartile in the subject area of mathematics and was announced by jury members to be the most influential Russian scientific journal of 2017.

Young Stars of Mirror Symmetry Come Together in Moscow

Mirror symmetry is a relatively new field of mathematics which came into being in the 1990s. In 2017, HSE opened the International Laboratory for Mirror Symmetry and Automorphic Forms. The December conference, ‘Mirror Symmetry and Applications’, was a commemoration of its first year of operation.

From October 23 to 29, 2017, the Department of Public Policy at the Higher School of Economics held a weeklong Winter School dedicated to the subject of the ‘Russian historic memory: in search of identity’. HSE Researchers Find Optimal Rules for Seedings in Knock-out Tournaments

Researchers have conducted a study on tournaments using the playoff system, which is one of the most popular forms of sporting competitions. The results of the study were published in the Journal of Combinatorial Optimization.

'I’ve Liked HSE and Moscow a Lot'

Carlos Cortez, a bronze medallist of the International Mathematical Olympiad (2011, 2012, 2013) and a Mathematics graduate of MIT, recently completed a two-month research internship at the HSE Faculty of Mathematics under the supervision of Professor Sergei Lando. He will soon be pursuing a Master’s degree at University Paris-Sud in France followed by a PhD at Northwestern University (USA).  The research internship was made possible through a cooperation agreement between MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI) and HSE.

‘Mirror Symmetry Was Discovered by Physicists, But Very Quickly Got the Attention of Mathematicians…’

The HSE International Laboratory for Mirror Symmetry and Automorphic Forms, which is among several international laboratories to recently open within the Higher School of Economics, was created in December 2016 as part of the Russian government’s mega-grants program. Below, the lab’s academic supervisor, Ludmil Katzarkov, along with deputy heads Valery Gritsenko and Viktor Przyjalkowski, explain why the laboratory is fully capable of becoming a unique multidisciplinary unit dedicated to the study of mirror symmetry, automorphic forms, and number theory.

Decision-making Rules Least Susceptible to Manipulation, According to Science

HSE researchers have used computer modelling to demonstrate the varying manipulability of decision-making procedures and to identify those least susceptible to manipulation. Their findings are published in the paper 'Manipulability of Majority Relation-based Collective Decision Rules'.
