Ilya Prakhov Took Part in Conference on Academic Profession in Knowledge Society

Ilya Prakhov, Research Fellow at the Center for Institutional Studies has taken part in the 4th International Conference on Academic Profession in Knowledge Society, held at Seoul National University.

Prakhov presented his report ‘The Determinants of Academic Salary in Russia’, in which he analysed the impact of the indicators of research, teaching and administrative activities on lecturers’ and professors’ salary in Russian universities.

The report shows that in general the number of publications (for example, the number of books and articles in academic journals) has a positive effect on the salary of teaching staff. Research and teaching activity as well as administrative activity and work experience also affect the salary. Teaching positively correlates with salary in general, while administrative work has the largest effect on salary. Work experience also leads to pay rises.

The most consistent results were obtained in national research universities, where a lecturer’s and researcher’s salary is determined by his or her research activity (the number of articles in academic journals), teaching and administrative activity. Wages also increase with the number of years of employment at the university, this result corresponds with human capital theory and several alternative theories.
