Nadejda Trubochkina’s Fractal 3D–Stereo Film Wins at 7th International 3D-stereo Film Festival

On December 22-23, 2016, the 7th International 3D-stereo Film Festival was held in Moscow. At the opening of the festival Nadejda Trubochkina, Professor at HSE School of Computer Engineering, presented a report on fractal technologies in cinema.

In the section dedicated to experimental films she presented the film ‘Second Flight Over the Gray Planet’ – the first completely mathematical (fractal) movie with a plot in cinema history.

The film was made using multifractal calculations, and is a philosophical tale about life’s fleeting nature and the need to cherish every moment. The film depicts a fantastic flight in time in a fractal (mathematical) world called the ‘gray planet’. The planet has its own life story: it is born, it grows from simple to complex, from piles of rocks and chaos to civilization.

The planet grows and changes – beautiful cities appear, the planet tries to change its identity – to turn its grey color into something more bright, to make life more vivid, but in the end, in pursuit of illusory values, the planet degrades and dies – and as it does so, it returns to its original chaos in order to start a new life, a new cycle, a new civilization, but with a different programme.

The film represents a civilizational cycle in three minutes – the effect of the compression of time and the idea of transience.
