HSE Faculty of Social Sciences to Offer Webinar on English-taught Master’s Programmes

On March 14, 2017, at 6:00 pm Moscow time, the HSE Faculty of Social Sciences will hold its first webinar for prospective international Master’s students. During the webinar, academic supervisors and leading lecturers will cover HSE’s English-taught Master’s programmes in political science, sociology and public administration.

Webinar participants will have an opportunity to learn more about the admissions and study processes, internships and employment opportunities. The webinar will also cover dual degree programmes, student exchanges and internship programmes with Europe’s leading universities in France, Germany, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Norway and Finland, among other countries.

The webinar will feature presentations by the programmes in Comparative Social Research, Population and Development, Politics, Economics and Philosophy, and Political Analysis and Public Policy.

The programme provides students with the theoretical and methodological skills they need to investigate and analyze the similarities and differences among nations, cultures, and other social groups to understand how contemporary societies, social issues, and conflicts around the globe evolve. Our international teaching staff creates a global atmosphere of learning, which is highly demanding and participatory at the same time. Moreover, invited guest lectures from around the world put our students in touch with cutting-edge research, while a mandatory research internship at a foreign or Russian institution puts them into the position to do so themselves. This is how we prepare our students for careers in academic social science or in the field of applied research and data analysis.

Students in this programme are trained in theories and methods of comparing countries, cultures, norms, values and institutions. Rigorous academic training takes place in Moscow, as well as during an internship at Russian and foreign research institutions such as King´s College and Tilburg University. Graduates of this programme pursue PhDs or work for such employers as the UNFPA, UNICEF and the World Bank.

As an interdisciplinary subject bringing together demography, economics and public policy, the Population and Development programme is designed to appeal to those interested in any of its three constituent fields. Moreover, this programme, while of course very academic in nature, is also oriented toward public policy and real-world problem solving as it trains experts in evaluating the consequences of demographic changes for economic and social development.  

In a world of dynamic politics, refugee crises, economic recovery, and aging societies, delving into a subject such as Population and Development can transport students straight to the heart of some of the hottest debates raging across the globe today. Population and Development introduces students to issues that are emergent and complex and that demand ingenuity and diverse perspectives. Given that young people (i.e., millennials) are perhaps the most engrossed in social activism of any generation in recent history, studying in a programme such as this will give them an array of tools to satisfy that nearly insatiable itch to change the world.

The Political Analysis and Public Policy programme combines political science, public administration, NGO management, and other related social sciences. The focus on various specialized policies, actors in policymaking, policy processes, and institutional context is what makes public policy unique and essential for understanding the contemporary world. Graduates of this programme will be equipped to work in governmental agencies, NGOs, and in the analytics departments at large companies such as Severstal, and Promsvyazbank.

The programme is truly international and highly competitive, attracting both fresh graduate students and mid-career executives from around the world. Our programme has a range of International cooperation agreements both in the form of the student mobility and internships with very established national and International organizations.

As for the study concentrations, we have two tracks – Human Rights and Democratic Governance and Public Policy Analysis. In each of the two tracks, the policy formation to policy implementation and policy impact are observed and analyzed.

Our programme trains experts who are ready and able to think strategically, solve complex problems and work in interdisciplinary and international teams. The Master’s programme is led by a unified ‘trio’ of disciplines: political science, economics and philosophy. This is no coincidence. Along with the trend towards deeper specialization and pragmatism strongly represented in current higher education systems, the opposite countervailing trend towards knowledge integration is no less evident and has tended to strengthen over time. This trend is fuelled by the understanding that important breakthroughs in the social sciences and humanities are often achieved at interdisciplinary crossings, and that divided disciplinary knowledge is unfit to face most challenges presented by the contemporary world.

'Technology as Such Never Simply Marks Progress'

In his lecture on December 3 at the HSE St Petersburg on 'Progress: A Reconstruction', Professor Peter Wagner (University of Barcelona) raised questions related to the nature of progress and our attitude to it. Professor Wagner is ICREA Research Professor in the Department of Sociological Theory, Philosophy of Law and Methodology of the Social Sciences at the University of Barcelona. He has been cooperating with HSE since 2014. Before his lecture, Editor of HSE English News, Anya Chernyakhovskaya talked to Professor Wagner about the elusive and changing nature of progress.

Workshop on Experimental Methods for Researchers at HSE Institute of Education

On December 12-24 a series of workshops on experimental methods for researchers by Prashant Loyalka, Leading Research Fellow of the International Laboratory for Education Policy Analysis at the HSE Graduate School of Education took place at HSE Institute of Education. He also delivered a series of lectures on ‘Quasi-experimental Research in Education’ for master’s students in Educational and Psychological Measurement.
