Lecture by Irene Polinskaya, King's College London, on ‘ Coping with the Gods:" Current Approaches to the Study of Greek Polytheism ’

Event ended

On March 26, Irene Polinskaya, Senior Lecturer in Greek History at King's College London, will deliver a lecture at HSE on ‘Coping with the Gods:" Current Approaches to the Study of Greek Polytheism’.

Abstract:

"Coping with the Gods:" Current Approaches to the Study of Greek Polytheism

The second half of the 20th century has been marked, in the study of Greek polytheism, by the opposition of two main approaches: the structuralist approach of J.-P. Vernant and the biological determinism of Walter Burkert. Their divergent views on the nature of divinity in ancient Greek religion had been also projected onto another major conceptual distinction, that between polis-religion and panhellenism, defined by Ch. Sourvinou-Inwood. With the passing of these trend-defining scholars, the 21st-century has begun with a critical revision of their views. The lecture will delve into the current debates on new directions in the study of ancient Greek religion.
