Genomics is one of the newest and most dynamic fields of modern science. This is a multidisciplinary field comprising biology, mathematics, statistics, computer science and bioinformatics. Rapidly decreasing prices of DNA sequencing together with capabilities of modern computational resources and development of new mathematical methods make it possible to answer many important and difficult problems. We discuss the main problems of genomics, their relations to each other and their applications.
We begin discussion with two areas which shape our data. Firstly, population genomics describes natural processes which create our data - DNA and genomes of different species. Secondly, data collection and data processing determine what kind of data is observable for us for further study.
Then we proceed to the discussion of the Genome Wide Association Study (GWAS) and medical applications, cancer genomics and metagenomics. Each of these studies has an important application to human health (including personalised medicine), environment (agriculture, ecology, garbage problems) and many other aspects of our life.
