International Forum for Young Scholars of Soviet and Post-Soviet History and Culture

The International Center for the History and Sociology of World War II and Its Consequences of the National Research University – Higher School of Economics, Moscow is pleased to announce a call for papers for the second session of the International Forum for Young Scholars of Soviet and Post-Soviet History and Culture. This new annual academic convention the first session of which took place in Moscow in December 2017 is open to Ph.D. students and young scholars who have completed their Ph.D.’s within the past three years. Applicants from all countries are welcome.

The second session of the International Forum is to be held at the Higher School of Economics, Moscow, on 29 November – 1 December 2018.

This forum is intended to allow young scholars the opportunity for interdisciplinary cross-fertilization with their own peers and with an esteemed group of senior scholars. We invite candidates from all sub-disciplines of history who are interested in presenting scholarly papers on Soviet and post-Soviet history and culture. Candidates from the disciplines of cultural studies, anthropology, Slavic studies, art history, literary, and cinema studies are also welcome.

The forum has a scholarly committee consisting of senior scholars who review applications. We plan that several committee members and some other distinguished scholars will participate in the forum’s sessions.

The following senior scholars participate in the committee:

  • Lynne Viola, University of Toronto – NRU HSE

We expect that the forum will have about twenty participants. The participants will be chosen by the review committee based on their paper proposals. Applications can be submitted in Russian or English and must include:

1. A cover letter with exact contact details

2. An updated CV

3. List of publications

4. Paper proposal (no more than 250 words)

5. One recommendation letter (to be sent directly to worldwar2@hse.ru)

All application materials should be received by the International Center no later than 25 August 2018.Applicants will be informed of the selection committee’s decision by 15 September, 2018. Please send all applications materials to the following address: worldwar2@hse.ru

Working languages of the Forum will be Russian and English.

The organizers will assist international participants with obtaining visa invitations to Russia.

Housing costs for the participants will be paid in full by the organizers of the Forum. Transportation for the Russian participants will be covered.  The Forum organizers have limited funds to cover (partially or in full) airfare of the international participants. We strongly encourage perspective participants to apply for funding from their home universities or from other sources.
