All Students to Be Given HSEcoins at HSE Day

At the beginning of the new academic year, HSE launched a new mechanism for supporting student projects – HSEcoin. Now students will be the ones deciding how financing will be distributed to student initiatives.

Starting September 13, the university will transfer HSEcoins to students every year. These HSEcoins can be spent in only one way – as donations to student projects and initiatives. HSEcoins can be found and managed on the HSE Family website under the ‘HSEcoin’ section.

Here, proactive students will be able to create their own non-commercial projects and announce that they are collecting HSEcoin donations. Once they receive the necessary amount, they can buy goods and services through the Student Initiative Support Centre for the equivalent amount of rubles. The university sets the HSEcoin-to-ruble exchange rate each year, and an announcement will be made in August as to how many HSEcoins will be distributed to students in 2018.

The HSEcoin section of the website will open on September 3 for the creation of projects, and HSEcoins themselves are set to be distributed to users on HSE Day, or September 13. This timeframe was set so that students will have had time to find their favourite student projects by the time the site fully launches.

For students who intend to launch their projects before the first HSEcoins are distributed, the HSE Student Initiative Support Centre is holding a special hackathon on September 5th and 6th. During this time, students can learn everything there is to know about HSEcoin, consult with experts, launch a project, and fine-tune their project there. The best way to amass ‘heaps’ of HSEcoin on HSE Day and get the amount you’re asking for is to publish your student project before the university issues HSEcoin to students. Registration is required to attend the hackathon.

Students can give their HSEcoins to the projects they like on HSE Day if they head to Studlife Alley or HSE Land, or if they go through the Freshman Quest.

On September 20, coordinators will give a large presentation on the project. In particular, they will announce the initial results of HSEcoin implementation and also talk about where the idea for the new student initiative support mechanism came from, as well as its possibilities. Registration required.

Igor Chirikov, HSE Vice Rector

The implementation of HSEcoin means that in order to receive university support, student projects need to convince not university administration, but HSEcoin holders – that is, the HSE community – of their relevancy. HSEcoin gives students the opportunity to try their hand at carrying out crowd and PR campaigns, and it also helps student projects find the right audience.

Additionally, HSEcoin is being implemented alongside existing support mechanisms: the student project contest, the simplified contest, and student organisation base financing. In the future, HSEcoin could become the key source of financing for student projects, possibly replacing all other financing options.

Please direct all questions about the project to its coordinators Ekaterina Savitskaya and Ivan Chernyavsky, as well as to the Studlife HSE community page.
