HSE Day 2018: Photo Report

On September 13, we celebrated yet another HSE Day, our annual start-of-the-academic-year festival, which is followed the year’s tough road of studies. Let’s look at some pictures from the events at Gorky Park and relive its best moments!

During HSE Day, we…

…ran

For the first time, the HSE Day included a race. It was called ‘5km to the Deadline’ since everyone at HSE, from students to professors, is usually scared of deadlines. We needed a symbolic victory over this fear, and we did it. The best male runners were Artem Tsibak (1st place), Ilya Shilkin (2nd), and Mikhail Bannikov (3rd). The female winners were Natalia Popkova (1st place), Anna Gundorina (2nd), and Anna Remizova (3rd).

All results

…became smarter

As usual, HSE Day included many lectures and discussions. People discussed career development, virtual reality and ‘good’ hackers at the Sberbank tent, as well as partnerships with businesses in educational programmes. Applied and fundamental science was enthusiastically talked about at the Garage Museum Educational Centre. The Professors’ Lecture Centre discussed artificial intelligence and human freewill, while English-language lectures covered such topics as the ‘Soviet periphery’ and issues faced by local communities.

…learned about recent discoveries and breakthroughs

Evgeny Yasin, HSE Academic Supervisor, opened the second season of the Student Science Battles. The winner of the battle was Vlad Krivoshekov with his talk on ‘Sexism towards Men: The Role of Gender Stereotypes’. At the ‘Science and Technology’ tent, HSE researchers in urban studies, psychology, neuroeconomics, physics, and engineering talked about their most recent achievements.

…rediscovered Russia

HSE’s student expeditions throughout Russia aim to bridge the gap between theory and reality. This programme is now in its second year. At a special presentation, students talked about the expeditions, compared their impressions with locals’ recollections, marked their native towns on a map, and sent special postcards to these locations.

…got to choose where to study

HSE Day is basically one great big Open House, where all faculties present their undergraduate and Master’s programmes. This time round, guests had an opportunity to look not only at on-site programmes, but at HSE’s online courses at the eLearning Office’s tent. Those too young to apply for university got acquainted with the HSE Lyceum, which had its own space at this year’s HSE Day. Students’ families were able to attend a parent-teacher meeting, where they learned about digital record books, HSE’s four exam periods per year, and other characteristics of studies at our university.

…built our careers

At HSE.Career.Start, an interactive space, students had an opportunity to meet with potential employers, including representatives of Sberbank, Mail.ru, KPMG, Unilever, Raiffeisen Bank, Coca-Cola, GK Lanit, Delovye Linii, and many other companies. Furthermore, at the ‘I’m a Professional’ competition, they learned about alternative career paths: the winners of the contest receive benefits applying for Master’s and doctoral programmes, as well as a chance to establish connections with potential employers.

…mastered the ins and outs of various subcultures

Third-year students of fashion at the HSE Art and Design School prepared the HARD 005: SUB-SUB-CULTURE collection, which they demonstrated at HSE Day. The show is based on a major research project: for several months, students looked into various subcultures, from hippies, punks, roofers, skaters, and Bōsōzoku bikers, to such recent trends as nerds, witch house and seapunk.

The curators of the show were Arts & Design School instructors Bakhtier Kavrakov, Katya Sycheva, Anzor Kankulov, and Katya Pavelko. Petr Gindilis (Digidon) was responsible for the music.

…learned about student life

The extracurricular life at HSE is in the hands of around 150 various student associations. They stage professional theatre performances, play in an orchestra, sing in a choir, organize big events, promote ‘green thinking’, organize charity events, travel and taking part in sports. The guests of HSE Day got to learn about these student associations at the #HseStudLife Alley. HSEcoin, an HSE crowdfunding platform, where students can donate HSEcoins to student projects at their liking, was also presented there.

…established international contacts

‘The Whole World at HSE’ space brought together not only students, but entire countries and cultures. Here, visitors got to drink traditional Russian tea from a samovar, learn national dances, or speak Portuguese, or, to put it simply, get to known various cultures, which are united at HSE through its international student community.

…had a chance to dance and sing

Khleb and The Hatters was the headlining band of the night. Alexander Shokhin, HSE President, and Yaroslav Kuzminov, HSE Rector, didn’t sing. Nonetheless, they congratulated the freshmen attendees on the start of their studies…

…and were having a wonderful time.

Sberbank was HSE Day’s General Partner, Unilever was Partner of the HSE Race, and Garage Museum of Contemporary Art was Educational Programme Partner. The information partners were Mel and M24.ru.
