Yi Jianping to speak on ' Highly Stratified Societies without Permanent Leadership: Yi in Liangshan of the Southwestern China '

On January 11 Yi Jianping (Chinese Academy of Social Sciences) will speak on 'Highly Stratified Societies without Permanent Leadership: Yi in Liangshan of the Southwestern China'. The event is organised by the International Centre of Anthropology.

Abstract:

We find a kind of unique societies organized by the Yi ethnic group before 1956 in Liangshan of the southwest of China. The pattern of their leadership was that of an equalitarian society, and the social structure was that of a highly stratified society. It is difficult to generalize them with the popular theories of equalitarian society, chiefdom, or stratified society. What a name should we give to them?
