University of London and HSE University Offer a Second Degree Programme in Law
Students who have been accepted to the HSE bachelor’s programmes in ‘Law’ and ‘Private Law’ may simultaneously enroll in the second degree programme at the University of London to supplement their basic training. The second degree programme is also open to external students and working professionals.
About the Programme
Late last year, HSE University and the University of London agreed to develop a joint law programme, and in June 2019, the HSE Faculty of Law officially became a certified educational centre of the University of London. Now HSE students can earn a diploma from the University of London while studying in Moscow as part of an additional educational programme.
This opportunity is available to applicants who are enrolled in the undergraduate programmes in ‘Law’ and ‘Private Law’, as well as students and graduates of HSE and other universities.
The academic consortium of the University of London, which includes University College London, King’s College London, the London School of Economics and Political Science, Queen Mary University of London, Birkbeck, and SOAS, will oversee the academic management of the programme and conduct student final assessments. The programme and curriculum in general law at HSE has been approved by the Academic Council of the University of London.
Programme Structure
First-year undergraduate students will take the course, ‘Introduction to English Legal System and Legal English’, which helps them prepare for study at the University of London. The course will be taught in three-session blocks held every Saturday. The cost of the course is 60,000 rubles per semester.
The course, which is taught in English, aims to acquaint students with British educational standards in law and to help ensure that students’ levels of proficiency in English meet the entry requirements of the University of London. In addition, students will have the opportunity to complete a one-month summer language preparatory programme in Cambridge before taking the IELTS exam.
Upon beginning the second year, students of the programme (whether they are HSE students, students from other universities, or working professionals) may study in the Bachelor of Laws programme at the University of London for four years. Students complete coursework there in addition to that of the main programme at their home university, and working professionals complete the coursework while working. Programme participants take three courses in the London programme per year. Courses are held on Saturdays with highly qualified instructors who hold degrees from the University of London, as well as instructors who teach in London. Students may complete the last course of the London programme in tandem with their coursework in the master’s programme or their professional activities.
Programme tuition is 110,000 rubles per semester. An additional tuition fee of about £ 1,200 (and for the first year, about £1,500) must be paid directly to the University of London.
How to Register
Registration for the second degree programme at the University of London at HSE is already open and will last until the end of September. Enrollment agreements for first-year undergraduate students will be determined on the basis of their enrollment status (for a state-funded place or a paid place) during the first year of their studies at HSE or another university.

Enrollment in the University of London will be granted on the basis of applicants’ educational status and proficiency level of English. Students must provide their academic transcripts as well as the certificate received upon completion of the IELTS exam with a score of 6 or higher (or at least 5.5 per section). Working professionals must submit a diploma of higher education, and either an appropriate language certificate or a certificate from their employer confirming that English is his or her second working language.

The Brain in Space: Investigating the Effects of Long Spaceflights on Space Travellers
As part of an international project conducted with the participation of Roscosmos and the European Space Agency, a team of researchers used differential tractography to analyse dMRI scans ofcosmonauts’ brains and found significant changes in brain connectivity, with some of the changes persisting after seven months back on Earth. Justice 'Ex Machina': Using Artificial Intelligence to Fight Corruption
In Mexico, a pilot project applying artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms enabled the Tax Administration Service to detect 1200 tax-evading companies and 3500 fraudulent transactions within three months – a task that would have taken 18 months using conventional methods. Despite some obvious benefits, the use of AI-based solutions to counter corruption also entails several challenges, according to experts of the HSE Laboratory for Anti-Corruption Policy (LAP) and the HSE Faculty of Law who have examined the relevant experience of several countries. A report based on the study’s* findings was presented at the XXIII Yasin (April) International Academic Conference hosted by the Higher School of Economics.
