HSE Students Go to Asia to Study Local Specifics of Economics, Politics, and Cultures
The HSE University and Kyung Hee University double degree programme ‘Economics and Politics in Asia’ is currently enrolling students. Its academic supervisor, Denis Shcherbakov, spoke about the advantages of the programme, internships at Asian universities and companies, as well as the new focus on Southeast Asia.
Why Asia is Attractive
Over the recent years, Russia’s trade, economic and political relations with the East have grown considerably.
Asian business communities are keen to develop businesses with their partners in Russia
But Russian companies often lack professionals capable of building productive and long-lasting relationships with partners from Asian countries.
We train highly qualified professionals who not only know Asia theoretically from textbooks, but have the experience of living long-term in the region and the countries of the languages they learn. All students of our programme go on internships to Asian countries during the third year of their studies, which means they study the local cultures on site.
Our programme is both fundamental and applied. We have fundamental disciplines, such as history, culture, religion and philosophy, which are priority areas for traditional Asian studies in Russia. This is an integral foundation for such applied subjects as contemporary international relation, regional and country-specific politics, specifics of local entrepreneurship, and participation in international economic relations.
What Graduates Are Expected by Employers
We have recently signed an agreement with KOSME, Korea SMEs and Startups Agency, which is ready to take our students on internships. Our Korean partners are expecting not just students who know the language, but active young people who can make independent decisions when faced with complicated situations.
Imagine that a company, Russian or Asian, starts a new project of bilateral trade and economic cooperation. Our graduate’s task would be to implement such a project from scratch to the ready-made stage: from market niche research to the search for potential partners, to making calculations and a business plan, to the start of the project and its ongoing supervision.
In addition, graduates of our programme may pursue careers in public service, research and consulting. Since the international situation is constantly changing, most Russian ministries have already created departments aimed at expanding cooperation with Asian countries. We regularly get offers from them to organize internships for our students.
How Studies Are Organized
When a student applies for our programme, they are simultaneously enrolled in two universities.
For the first two years, they study at HSE University.
During the first semester of the third year, students (depending on the language of their choice) study at universities in China, Korea, Japan or Southeast Asian countries, and improve their skills in the relevant languages.
During the second semester of the third year, all students study at Kyung Hee University, where they take practice-oriented disciplines in their major and minor fields, and study for exams.
The fourth year at HSE University is dedicated to pre-graduation internships at companies and the programme’s partner organizations and preparation of the thesis. At the same time, the students continue improving their skills of consecutive and simultaneous translation.
Graduates of this programme receive:
A bachelor’s degree in International Area Studies from HSE University;
A Bachelor of International Studies (Chinese/Korean/Japanese/Southeast Asian Studies) degree from Kyung Hee University;
A supplementary diploma in Global Business or International Relations from Kyung Hee University.
Focusing on Asia
Southeast Asia today is one of the most dynamically developing regions in the world. Most Russian and international experts agree that over the next 20 years, this region will become one of the major players in the global economic and political arena.
Russia’s trade and investment cooperation with Southeast Asian countries has expanded recently.
We foresee a sharply growing demand for highly qualified professionals specializing in these countries over the next few years.
In Southeast Asian countries, as well as in East Asian countries, Kyung Hee University and its graduates have an excellent reputation among employers
We believe that, in addition to employment opportunities in Russia, our students and graduates will be able to pursue careers in the countries of their studies.
How to Save on Tuition and Flights
Our programme offers only fee-paying places, but we do our best to help our students reduce tuition costs.
During the studies in the ‘Russian’ part of the programme, there is a system that offers discounts of up to 25%, and about half the students on the programme get a discount.
During the third year of studies, which is spent abroad, the students pay only to Kyung Hee University, which also has a system of grants that cover up to 25% of tuition fees.
To participate in summer schools, Kyung Hee University as well as other HSE University partner universities, offers grants. Over 20 students have already taken advantage of these grants.
Third-year students of the programme can get their Korean visas at the Korean consulates in Japan, China or the Southeast Asian countries where they currently are on an internship. They don’t need to spend time and money on return flights to Russia. In addition, HSE University has signed an agreement with Korean Air, which offers discounts up to 15% for flights, and pan-Asian flights (for example, Shanghai – Seoul) can be totally free. Over 100 HSE University students have already taken advantage of this agreement.
