What You Can Do in Data Science: HSE University Invites Applications for IDAO 2020
The registration for the 3rd International Data Analysis Olympiad (IDAO 2020) organised jointly by the HSE Faculty of Computer Science and Yandex, is open until January 21,2020. The international competition introduces young developers and analysts to current issues in Data Science.
IDAO 2020 will be held in two rounds. The first stage will be a traditional machine learning competition held on the Yandex.Contest platform. Developers will need to train a model to make new predictions and then upload them to an automatic verification system.
The top 30 teams of the Online Stage will advance to the on-site final, which will be held on at the Yandex headquarters in Moscow. In the final 36 hours of the competition, participants will endeavour not only to train a model, but to create a full-fledged prototype, which will be tested both in terms of accuracy and performance. Participants will have to complete the competition tasks in real-life conditions: they have to make tight deadlines, abide by capacity limitations, and work in a team.
The Olympiad is already in its third year. The winners of the first IDAO - the Magic City team – are now busy working in sports programming. St. Petersburg State University alumni Roman Pyankov and Sergey Arefyev have repeatedly won prizes at Sberbank data analysis and AI hackathons.
According to Roman, IDAO was the first competition that his team managed to win. ‘The victory gave us experience, at the very least, and excellent laptops (a laptop is a traditional prize in IDAO – editor’s note),’ says Roman. ‘Now Sergey and I are participating in almost all tournaments, since the majority of them are held online.’ The prize fund of these kinds of competitions can reach several million rubles.

Solving an applied problem in a short time in a competition with a bunch of other teams is interesting. But what’s even more interesting is improving your solution over the course of the competition – when you can come up with hacks and see them work. It is also a useful line on your resume. My wishes to IDAO participants: sign up for this contest, try different things, use your time, energy, and server capacities to show what you are capable of at DS.
Winners and runners up of IDAO 2020 will receive valuable prizes and gifts, as well as an advantage in getting into the Yandex School of Data Analysis and master's programmes at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science.

The HSE Cultural Centre recently hosted an awards ceremony for the winners of the PROD Olympiad. This is the first-ever industrial IT-development competition for 9th–11th graders in Russia, organised by HSE University, Tinkoff Bank, and the Central University (Moscow). About 4,000 people from 89 regions of Russia, as well as from Kazakhstan, Belarus, Armenia, China, and Turkmenistan, participated in the qualifying stage, with 43 people emerging as eventual winners.
Open Olympiad in Informatics for School Students Held with Participation of HSE University
The 18th Open Olympiad in Informatics was held in March at four locations; Moscow, Perm, Lipetsk and Tehran. The Olympiad included an online qualifying round and an on-site final round, which was attended by 435 schoolchildren from many countries, including Russia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Belarus, Bulgaria, China, Cuba, Egypt, Georgia, and Germany. The event was co-organised by HSE University.
‘The Goal of the Spring into ML School Is to Unite Young Scientists Engaged in Mathematics of AI’
The AI and Digital Science Institute at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science and Innopolis University organised a week-long programme for students, doctoral students, and young scientists on the application of mathematics in machine learning and artificial intelligence. Fifty participants of Spring into ML attended 24 lectures on machine learning, took part in specific pitch sessions, and completed two mini-courses on diffusion models—a developing area of AI for data generation.

Today, text bots like ChatGPT are doing many tasks that were originally human work. In our place, they can rewrite ‘War and Peace’ in a Shakespearean style, write a thesis on Ancient Mesopotamia, or create a Valentine’s Day card. But is there any way to identify an AI-generated text and distinguish it from works done by a human being? Can we catch out a robot? The Deputy Head of the HSE School of Data Analysis and Artificial Intelligence, Professor of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science Vasilii Gromov explained the answer in his lecture ‘Catch out a Bot, or the Large-Scale Structure of Natural Intelligence’ for Znanie intellectual society.
Software for Rapid Detection of Dyslexia Developed in Russia
HSE scientists have developed a software tool for assessing the presence and degree of dyslexia in school students based on their gender, age, school grade, and eye-tracking data. The application is expected to be introduced into clinical practice in 2024. The underlying studies were conducted by specialists in machine learning and neurolinguistics at the HSE AI Research Centre.
HSE and Indian Institute of Technology Delhi Agree on Joint Research Projects
HSE University-St Petersburg and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi), a leading Indian university, have agreed to launch joint research projects in the field of social, political studies, humanities, and data analysis for master's students. On the Russian side, this work will be coordinated by the HSE St Petersburg School of Social Sciences.
