Students from both HSE Moscow and HSE St. Petersburg have made it to the finals of the ICPC-2020 World Programming Championship. They were among the best teams at the semi-finals stage of the championship, which took place last weekend in St. Petersburg.

The International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC), the largest student programming contest, has been held since the 1970s. Qualifying competitions are held annually in more than 100 countries worldwide, with students from more than 3,000 universities taking part. On December 1, a qualifying tournament among Northern Eurasian universities came to a close, and the winning teams will go on to compete in the global finals.

Over 300 student teams representing universities in Russia and the countries of the former USSR gathered in St. Petersburg. Among them were ten teams from HSE University. All participants had to solve as many of the twelve proposed tasks as possible over the course of five hours (which is the standard time for ICPC competitions).

Seventh place overall and silver medals went to Logarifmya4ka team, a team of students from the Bachelor's programme in Applied Mathematics and Information Science: Mikhail Anoprenko, Vladimir Romanov and Ivan Safonov. They qualified for the ICPC World Finals.

Igor Labutin, Nikita Podguzov and Yegor Bogomolov from HSE University in St. Petersburg (Master's programme in Software Development and Data Analysis) will also compete in the finals.

The ICPC World Finals will be held in June 2020 in Moscow. Its organizing committee is led by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

HSE students have already experienced success by competing in the ICPC finals, having won bronze medals twice.
