Miloud Lacheheb (Algeria) is a second-year student in the ‘Applied Statistics with Network Analysis’ Master’s Programme. After earning his bachelor’s in management in Algeria and a masters’ degree in Economics in Malaysia, he decided to earn a second master’s degree and study data analysis and statistics at HSE University in Moscow.

New Area of Expertise

At first glance, it seems that my education background has nothing to do with my actual study programme. However, the application of big data and contemporary data analysis methods has a lot to offer in applied economics and econometrics. Needless to say, statistics is used in almost every field, and economics is no exception.

My interest falls in the area of applied economics. I like that this programme gives me the ability to deal with big data and use advanced statistical methods to get insights related to applied economics.

One key advantage of this programme is that students are exposed to an extensive overview of statistical tools and software, which allows them to find the area most suitable to their interests, education background, and most importantly, their professional goals

I have found every course interesting in its own right, even if it has nothing or very little to do with my specific research area. Applied linear models, data mining and Bayesian data analysis have had a huge impact on my knowledge. Those courses have opened my eyes to new ways of doing data analysis and more effectively dealing with all kinds of economic issues.

My thesis focuses on the relationship between oil price and inflation in Algeria using Bayesian methods, whereas in my first year coursework I used spatial data analysis and data mining methods to investigate the regional balance in Algeria.

A Long Way from Home

Moving to another country is always a challenge for international students. Whether they are coming from countries that are not so different, like Eastern European countries that have strong ties with Russia, or if they are coming from a country where it is totally different in terms of culture, language, and even climate, as for me.

Funny enough, I come from Ouargla, a city which has been declared to be one of the hottest places in the world during the summer. Now here I am in Moscow, known as being one of the coldest cities in the world. This is a situation people rarely experience.

In short, Moscow has surpassed my expectations by far

Before my arrival I had a hard time imagining what the city, people, and climate would be like, because unlike famous European or American cities, there is not much information in English online about living and studying in Russia. The metro was one of the most fascinating parts of my journey. I love its style and the historical touches—even when it’s crowded. Taking the metro is like going on a museum tour. I never get too annoyed if I get lost in the metro since every metro station has its own unique style and superb elegance. I’ve also enjoyed getting to know my classmates. One in particular worth mentioning is my classmate Ivan, who spared no effort to make my stay easy and smooth.

Future Plans

Even though I have already founded a start-up (DZ ANALYSIS), I still see myself in academia applying acquired skills. So, after I earn this second master’s degree from HSE, I will probably apply to a Ph.D programme.

Attend one of the Open House events to meet Professor Valentina Kuskova, Academic Supervisor of the programme, take part in workshops, and ask questions about the programme.

Dates of Open house days:

  • February 25;
  • March 10 and 23;
  • April 8, 13 and 27;
  • May 18;
  • June 15 and 29;
  • July 13
Admissions to HSE’s degree programmes are now open. International students can apply online.
