Four people have received this award for their achievements in the field of Computer Science: two HSE University graduate students, one doctoral student, and Sergei Obiedkov, Deputy Dean for Research and International Relations at the Faculty of Computer Science.

Overall, 12 people were awarded this year: nine young researchers and three academic advisors from the country's leading universities.

Among the winners of the award are HSE graduate students Artem Gadetsky, who is involved in gradient optimization; Alexander Lyzhov, who is studying optimization problems; and HSE St. Petersburg doctoral student Dmitry Ivanov, working in the field of Positive-Unlabeled Learning and reinforcement learning, as well as the application of machine learning methods in economics. Students who have already presented their work at prestigious international conferences were declared winners in the ‘Young Researcher’ category. Furthermore, Sergei Obiedkov, Deputy Dean for Research and International Relations at the Faculty of Computer Science, was awarded in the ‘Academic Advisor’ category.

The winners were selected by the Award Committee, which was comprised of Yandex’s top managers, as well as scientists who work in collaboration with the company, including Aleksey Efros, Professor at the University of California at Berkeley, Stanislav Smirnov, Professor at the University of Geneva and Fields laureate, and Ilya Muchnik, Professor at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

The prize named after Yandex co-founder Ilya Segalovich first appeared in 2019. It is awarded to young specialists from Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus, who are engaged in research data search studies and analysis, natural language processing and machine translation, speech recognition and synthesis, as well as machine learning.

This year, the Ilya Segalovich Award is being bestowed for the second time, and again among its winners are students and a teacher of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science. Over a very short period of time, the award has become a landmark for the computer science community. The main reason, in my opinion, is that the award dedicated to Ilya Segalovich is initially destined to succeed. The quality of the Award Committee, the successful selection procedure for candidates and laureates, and Yandex’s excellent reputation were also important factors. We are pleased that, based on the strict competitive selection, FCS students and staff are among the global leaders in their respective research fields.

Since the establishment of the Faculty of Computer Science at HSE University, we have awarded the Ilya Segalovich Scholarships to our undergradaute and graduate stduents every year (usually in April). This year, the scholarship was awarded for the sixth time. Therefore, we have already had 96 laureates. It is nice to see that when our graduates assess their studies at FCS, the scholarship laureates understand that receiving the scholarship is one of the main events of their student life. And now, with the Research Award, there are more opportunities to recognize professional achievements. We hope that this award will continue to serve as an excellent incentive for our professional community and the professional growth of young researchers in the field of Computer Science

Researchers at HSE in St Petersburg Develop Superior Machine Learning Model for Determining Text Topics

Topic models are machine learning algorithms designed to analyse large text collections based on their topics. Scientists at HSE Campus in St Petersburg compared five topic models to determine which ones performed better. Two models, including GLDAW developed by the Laboratory for Social and Cognitive Informatics at HSE Campus in St Petersburg, made the lowest number of errors. The paper has been published in PeerJ Computer Science.
