HSE University will enhance its programmes in Software Engineering implemented by the Faculty of Computer Science together with the RAS Institute for System Programming (ISP RAS) and the company, 1C. The focus will be on the study of cutting-edge technology of software development as well as on expanding the number of various specializations.

The programme’s partners will initiate new academic programmes, forms of staff activity, and projects with students and staff, in addition to promoting international cooperation, attracting foreign experts, and developing online courses and specializations. The academic partner, ISP RAS, will additionally promote research and publication activity, secure grants, and develop doctoral programmes. The industry partner, 1C, will attract new partners for the School, develop continuing education programmes, open new laboratories, and develop applied research.

Arutyun Avetisyan, Director of ISP RAS, member of RAS, and Head of the Joint Department with the RAS Institute for System Programming of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science, has been appointed Academic Supervisor for the ‘Software Engineering’ specialization.

System programming is a key component of high-quality, competitive digital transformation and an independent area of academic knowledge. That’s why education in this field should have a good start, right from the first year of studies. Already when students are in their first year, they should not only understand the algorithms and data structures, but also know how to create programmes that are most effective on modern equipment and are sufficiently secure. To do this, we have to build a track of interrelated courses as part of the bachelor’s programme. Only this way, we’ll be able to prepare experts capable of developing operation system technologies at a global level, as well as compilation technology and data analysis. Our mission at HSE University is to transform software engineering instruction into an advanced educational environment based on cutting-edge research, best study practices, and industry collaboration.

Sergey Lebedev, supervisor of ‘1C: ERP Academy’ specialization, was appointed Head of the School of Software Engineering at the Faculty of Computer Science.

Boris Nuraliev, director of 1C, said that Software Engineering is an important area of education for specialists who will work in the company.

We have actively collaborated with the HSE School of Software Engineering for a few years now, and one of the key steps in this cooperation was the founding of our joint department in summer 2020. We are happy to be part of the rising level of student training at the Faculty of Computer Science, which is one of the country’s strongest departments in this field. As an industry partner, I believe that we will involve our staff in teaching, supervision of student projects and theses, as well as expand student internship programmes. I believe that reinforcing the fundamental, academic part of student education is important: in this regard, I’m happy to see ISP RAS as the key academic partner of the School.

HSE University has long been a partner of ISP RAS and 1C, so development of software engineering education is a reasonable step in this continuing partnership. The Joint Department with the RAS Institute for System Programming was created in 2015 at the Faculty of Computer Science as part of the School of Software Engineering. The Department specializes in several important areas: operation systems, compilation technology, software development technologies and tools, system integration and applied software complexes, and others.

The Joint Department with 1C opened on August 17, 2020. The Department aims to advance the field of industrial software engineering at the Faculty of Computer Science. Particular attention is paid to giving the students an understanding of engineering and industrial aspects of software development, as well as a good comprehension of mathematical disciplines. Students study not only the theory of programming, but also its industry application.
