Summer School of Design to Be Held in St Petersburg

The HSE Art and Design School in St Petersburg is launching the Summer School of Design, a new urban educational project for those interested in design and visual art. The school, which is organised with support from the government of St Petersburg, will be held online on July 4–10 and will offer first-level courses in seven design disciplines.

The Summer School of Design is aimed at people interested in design and visual art. The project has been organised by HSE University in St Petersburg with support from the city government, and is being held as part of the implementation of the Concept of Scientific and Technological Development of St Petersburg until 2030. The Summer School programme is intended for a wide audience, from high school students preparing for admissions to adults thinking about continuing education or retraining. Its intensive courses will also be useful to students of city and regional art and design colleges and universities.

The Summer School of Design will be held online on July 4–10, 2022. It will be the first of a two-level educational project in seven design disciplines taught at the HSE Art and Design School in St Petersburg:

2. ‘Urban Design’ by Andrey Punin

3. ‘Books and Typography’ by Evgeny Grigoriev

4. ‘Public Art’ by Andrey Lyublinsky

5. ‘Poster’ by Sergey Kleshchev

6. ‘Object Design’ by Pavel Ulyanov

7. ‘Font, Calligraphy, and Lettering’ by Vladimir Anosov

The school will be career oriented. Students will learn about various areas of modern design and visual art, and will then have an opportunity to continue their studies and attend offline classes in St Petersburg in the autumn of 2022.

The week-long summer intensive programme will help students to learn about various areas of the design industry and determine their personal preferences for participation in workshops. The second level, which involves project work and six workshops with curators, will take place in the autumn. Participants of the programme will gain in-depth knowledge and acquire project skills in their chosen field of study. The format of interaction between curators and students is similar to that between art directors and designers in a professional studio. Each participant will complete a creative project that they can proudly include in their design portfolio.

Cooperation between the HSE Art and Design School in St Petersburg and leading cultural institutions is an important part of the city's cultural life. In 2018–2022, the following major exhibition projects were implemented: the ’33 Signs’ project in partnership with the Manege Central Exhibition Hall, joint projects with the Russian Museum of Ethnography, exhibitions of posters and books by school students at various cultural venues, as well as exhibition design and identity for urban events. The activities of the HSE Art and Design School in St Petersburg are much discussed in the cultural and design industry, while guests and residents of the city appreciate such events as part of the St Petersburg cultural agenda.

The development of the design industry has wide-ranging prospects for St Petersburg. This is one of the important areas of the city’s economic development—the share of specialists employed in it should be about 10% of the population, and the city design support programme has been developed to achieve this. Training programmes aimed at unveiling the creative potential of St Petersburg residents is an important part of this support. The Open Summer School of Design is another important initiative from HSE University in St Petersburg, and participation in it will be useful and interesting to anyone who would like to gain new knowledge in this creative field.

Role of Street Art in Urban Environment Discussed at HSE CREATIVE HUB

On July 22, the HSE CREATIVE HUB space hosted the ‘AGREED’ street art festival. This is the first collaboration between HSE Art and Design School students and the CHAIN ​​community. HSE Art and Design School End-of-Year Exhibition Opens at MMOMA

At the end of each academic year, students of the HSE Art and Design School present an exhibition of their works. On June 30, the opening ceremony of this year’s exhibition, titled ‘Telling Stories. Big Data’, took place at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMOMA). The exhibition unites students, graduates, and teachers of the HSE University Art and Design School and the Faculty of Creative Industries.

‘Screen Arts. Roll Call’ Exhibition of the HSE Art and Design School Opens in Kaliningrad

The ‘Screen Arts. Roll Call’ cultural and educational project of the HSE Art and Design School will be exhibited at the Baltic branch of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Kaliningrad until July 16, 2023. The project is a continuation of an HSE ART GALLERY exhibition held in September 2022. The exhibition presents a dialogue between three generations: pioneers of video art in Russia, young classicists, and students of the HSE Art and Design School who are uncovering new possibilities in screen arts.

Third Season of HSE CREATIVE OPEN Comes to an End

On April 4, the HSE Art and Design School hosted an award ceremony for the winners and runners-up of the third season of the HSE CREATIVE OPEN international online competition. This season’s categories included Identity, Object Design, Music Release, Advertising Concept, Illustration, and Game Space.

Art and Design School Announces ‘Parajanov—100: Collage / Poster’ Contest

The HSE University Art and Design School and the Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University, in collaboration with the Sergei Parajanov Museum and the Artists' Union of Armenia, have announced an open contest dedicated to the centenary of Sergei Parajanov’s birth. The contest starts on March 7.

‘We Support Young Brands and Make Them Visible’

On March 7, the HSE Art Gallery hosted the opening of ‘Design Futures: Synesthesia’, an exhibition featuring works by students of product and jewellery design at the HSE Art and Design School. The event runs from March 9–May 7.

New Design Festival ‘Sreda’ 2022: HSE Art and Design School Again Named Educational Institution of the Year

The jury of the New Design Festival ‘Sreda’ 2022 have announced their winners. Projects by students, graduates and curators of the HSE Art and Design School have won prizes and received special awards, while the School was selected as the educational institution of the year for the second year in a row. Evgeny Kashirin, lecturer at the HSE Art and Design School, was named tutor of the year.

HSE Art and Design School Accepts Projects for Contemporary Art Competition

The first season of the new competition for prospective applicants of HSE Art and Design School has started. The competition aims to unite promising young artists on one platform. The winners will receive tuition discounts of up to 100% for the HSE Bachelor's Programme in Contemporary Art.

Students of HSE Art and Design School Take All Prizes at ADCR Awards

Eight works by students of the HSE Art and Design School are among the winners in the ‘Students’ category of the ADCR Awards, a Russian professional competition in the field of creativity, design and advertising. HSE students won all gold, silver and bronze awards. Many student works were also included in the shortlist of the competition, while Evgeny Kashirin, lecturer at the HSE Art and Design School, was named tutor of the year.
