From November 5 to 9, 2024, HSE University, in collaboration with the Beijing Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Applications, is hosting a joint conference on algebraic geometry and mathematical physics. Over 30 mathematicians from leading universities in Russia and China are presenting on recent advancements in geometry and mathematical physics. The conference is held in a hybrid format.

The conference marks the launch of ‘Geometry and Physics’, a new joint research project between the HSE International Laboratory for Mirror Symmetry and Automorphic Forms and the Beijing Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Applications (BIMSA), conducted as part of HSE University's International Academic Cooperation programme.

This is the third major joint academic event between HSE University and BIMSA. The first event was the Geometry and Physics Conference conducted in August 2023. This summer, a workshop was held in Beijing in memory of Igor Krichever, who led the Mathematics and Mathematical Physics programme at HSE University. All joint events feature presentations by leading scientists who shape the global development of mathematics. This year's participants include three Fields medallists: Caucher Birkar, an American and Iranian mathematician; Maxim Kontsevich, a Russian-French mathematician; and Andrei Okounkov, a Russian-American mathematician. The conference also features a special track with 14 presentations by talented early-career mathematicians from Russia and China.

Valery Gritsenko

'We can see that academic cooperation between the mathematicians of our universities is evolving into a major, multifaceted international project. We are confident that this will lead to outstanding scientific results and the emergence of a new generation of promising young mathematicians,' says Valery Gritsenko, Head of the International Laboratory for Mirror Symmetry and Automorphic Forms.

HSE University considers China one of its top priority countries for the development of long-term scientific and educational cooperation. The university's partners include dozens of leading universities in China, and this number continues to grow each year.
