Interview with Maxim Nikitin, Academic Supervisor of the ICEF master’s programme in Financial Economics.

— Dr. Nikitin, what's new for applicants to the ICEF Master's programmes?

— The big news this year is that we have some state-funded places and we are expecting to offer them to 25 students. We'll still have privately funded places too, of course. We have 35 student places for 2013.

— Can you tell us about the application procedure for the ICEF master’s programme this year?

— This year we will be continuing to follow our guiding principle – to follow the best practices of universities around the world. We are keeping our early application procedure, and we are using Skype to interview prospective students from other cities. These innovations, which we introduced last year, have made the application process in ICEF much easier: most applicants in 2012 were clear about their chances long before the start of the official enrolment procedure, and students from other cities had time to decide whether to go to Moscow.

The early application period ends on May 29th. The last date for applications is May 24th. After that, students can apply by following the regular procedure (from June 3rd to July 16th).

— What is the document consideration procedure like? What are the requirements for participants?

— In order to apply, students need to submit their higher education diploma or academic certificate (with subjects and grades), as well as filling in an application form. These documents should be sent to Sabina Babaeva, head of the office of master’s studies, via e-mail at sbabaeva@hse.ru. She can also provide you with an application form. We try to consider the applications promptly, and applicants are usually informed of our decision within a week.

Each applicant should also provide evidence of their English level. Applicants can submit the results of their IELTS, TOEFL or other test, or pass the ICEF English examination, which is a similar format to IELTS.

— Please tell us more about these interviews via Skype. Was the use of this technology successful?

— This is one of our recent innovations, and it was aimed at making the enrolment procedure easier for students from other cities. We decided to carry out entrance interviews via Skype, by holding a video conference with the participation of the same teaching staff as we use for interviews in Moscow. The date and time of the video conference are agreed beforehand, and we’ve found that this type of interview is convenient both for prospective students and teachers. Last year’s experience was very successful, and in the coming years, no doubt the role of technology in ICEF will continue to grow.
