Workshop "How to avoid machine translation pitfalls"
For the past twenty years, researchers have relied on machine translation to prepare papers for publication in English. One of the biggest challenges is insufficient translation quality, often resulting from unclear or poorly written Russian source texts. This workshop shows how to use machine translation safely and effectively, and how to avoid typical mistakes when preparing manuscripts.
In the workshop, we will review the most widely used free machine-translation tools available in Russia; learn practical pre-editing techniques for Russian source text; examine frequent machine-translation errors and strategies to fix them; and practice post-editing English texts.
Participants will receive a concise checklist for preparing Russian texts and for post-editing English translations, learn how to assess machine-translation quality, and gain hands-on experience editing both Russian and English texts.
Speaker: Natalya Gunina holds a PhD (Linguistics) and has led the Department of Foreign Languages and Professional Communication at Tambov State Technical University since 2013. She has been working as a translator for university journals for more than 25 years. Her interests include AW, ESP, and AI-assisted translation.
