Course "Targeting your Writing to the Journal Requirements: Preparatory Stage"
Our practice-oriented course, which provides immediate feedback, is designed for researchers who are taking their first steps in publishing in English and want to learn more about disciplinary language and specific features of international journals.
For an author aiming at an international publication, choosing the right journal is a key factor in publication success. As there is a great variety of journals, the criteria for ensuring the right fit are not always obvious. It is important to understand how to reach a wide audience of specialists in a particular field by writing for the right journal. An equally important aspect is writing an article in accordance with the requirements of the selected journal. A language corpus compiled on the basis of the best publications in the relevant disciplinary field can provide significant assistance in writing for publication.
The goal of the program is to help you use various tools to find suitable journals and analyze language features in your disciplinary fields with regards to the requirements of the selected journals.
During the course you will:
1. choose an international journal for publication using a combination of traditional approaches and AI tools (e.g. DeepSeek, Perplexity, and Elicit*)
2. prepare a list of relevant sources in the required format using reference managers and AI tools
3. create a language corpus of articles in your disciplinary field to identify specific terms and language conventions.
You will be able to apply the skills gained from working with the language corpus to work independently with any texts within your field of interest.

Trainer: Varvara Sosedova is currently working for Clarivate Analytics. She is a member of the National Consortium of Writing Centers. She holds a degree in Philology and has authored a number of publications in Linguistics and Cultural Studies. Her areas of expertise are academic writing, writing grant proposals, and database search. She is a co-author of the English for Research Publication Purposes course on Coursera.

How do I get accepted? The course is offered on a competitive basis. To ensure the course effectiveness, applicants are selected on the basis of their motivation letters (answers to the questions in the registration form). For the center, these answers are a diagnostic tool allowing to gauge the applicant’s level of English and writing skills.
NB: Answers generated with AI tools will not be accepted.
