ANR-Lab Seminar “Feeling safe in the city: methodological aspects of measurement”

Event ended

On Monday, May 16, at 20:00, a scientific seminar of the International Laboratory for Applied Network Research will be held, where Tamara Shcheglova, research-assistant at ANR-Lab, will talk about her research.

The city attracts potential residents with its opportunities, but the growth of cities increases the physical and social risks that negatively affect human life. The problem of urban safety has attracted the attention of social scientists for many years, as it affects the psychological and psychosocial state of individuals and society. In domestic and foreign discussions about a safe urban environment, primarily objective factors are being noted: ecology, the quality of the urban environment, the level of crime, etc. However, subjective factors related to the individual characteristics of citizens (their emotions, the information field in which they are, relationships with other people and self-perception) play an important role in the perception of safety. To date, there is no methodology for assessing the subjective perception of urban safety, which would take into account the socio-emotional component. The purpose of the dissertation research is to identify the methodological possibilities and limitations of measuring the feeling of safety in the city.

At the seminar, Tamara will share her research findings, in particular, she will talk about the conceptualization of the concept of “a feeling of safety in the city”.

If you would like to participate in the seminar, please write to the research assistant of the laboratory Aryuna Kim (avkim@hse.ru, +7 (910) 416-72-82).
