The donation ceremony was attended by Kim Sun Min, Founder and Director of the Pushkin House Cultural and Educational Centre, and Park Jung Gon, Director of the Cultural Centre of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Russia. HSE University received two paintings by Son Jin Seok, a professor at Kyung Hee University. The paintings will now adorn the premises of HSE’s Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs.

On September 3, a ceremony was held at HSE University in Moscow to mark the donation of works by Son Jin Seok. The event was opened by HSE President Nikita Anisimov. He thanked the Pushkin House in Seoul and the Cultural and Educational Centre of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Moscow for the valuable gift and highlighted the importance of cultural and educational cooperation. ‘At any time, interaction between people through cultural projects shapes the future,’ Nikita Anisimov said.

‘These paintings are more than just works of art. They are a symbol of friendship between our two countries, and between the Cultural Centre and HSE University. I am confident that this friendship will last forever,’ Park Jung Gon added.

Kim Sun Min, Founder and Director of the Pushkin House Cultural and Educational Centre in Seoul, who has been promoting Russian culture in Korea for more than 20 years, described the occasion as ‘fate’ and expressed hope for further expansion of cooperation with HSE University.

‘Recently, the Pushkin House has also been working to promote Korean culture in Russia. We have managed to organise quite a number of exhibitions. The paintings we are presenting to HSE University today depict the most famous Buddhist pagodas in the city of Gyeongju, one of the symbols of Korean culture,’ Kim Sun Min said.

In her response, Anastasia Likhacheva, Dean of HSE’s Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, emphasised the symbolic significance of the choice of location for the paintings. ‘Our faculty is a space where contemporary Korea is studied through a deep understanding of its cultural foundations. Traditional painting viewed through a contemporary lens is a wonderful metaphor for how we approach the study of Asia. Very soon, once the paintings have found their new home at our faculty, we will launch an open competition for creative essays among our students. I hope that the best of them will have the opportunity to visit Korea,’ Anastasia Likhacheva commented.

Concluding the ceremony, the participants noted that initiatives of this kind provide a solid foundation for further cooperation between HSE University and the Pushkin House in Seoul, as well as with the university’s other Korean partners.
